I scraped against a rock yesterday on my Sabfoil. After I sand the leading edge, I'm wondering if I should do something about the finish? The sabfoil wings remind me of the finish on fly rods, which is a lacquer.

If you have deep scratches I would not try to sand them out, scratch has to be super light for me to sand it out, otherwise I use epoxy and a razor blade long edge to fill them in with minimal excess, and then sand flush, at least for my AFS foil, the carbon wing is a lot harder than the Devcon 2-Ton epoxy when it is cured., so it is easy to sand off the excess Devcon epoxy without removing wing material.

Do not sand out , fill chips and scratches if possible, takes a little more effort but worth it to maintain original mast profile

Good video for when you give your wing a good bang or scratch. As others have said, it's essential to maintain the original profile.



Light, light scratches can be filled in with clear enamel clear coat and then a super light sand. Matte works well for raw carbon, gloss for finishes like the Moses.

Masking tape is your friend in minimizing overspray that has to be sanded .

I actually did this on an older foil, I don't know why I forgot about it. Thanks for the reminder.

Is there a preferred type of epoxy for this type of repair? I have some general epoxy that I use with fiberglass (long cure time) and I have some 5 minute epoxy.

This seems clever, the product he uses is softer than epoxy.

tintingwen uses a black polyester glazing compound that's easily available outside the states but is quite expensive here. I contacted the importer and they really aren't set up for retail so shipping etc makes it problematic.

Make sure the epoxy is waterproof, generic Walmart and HD 5-minute two part epoxies in the dual syringe are not waterproof for all the brands I looked at.
