Maybe I should now design some fast stuff?

That's quick for a 1200 .
What are the other details - board, sail, wind and water-state?

Pretty flat water, wind gusting to around 20 knots...JP Slalom Foil Board...Doutone F Pace foil sail..I think a 7.0

Really cool! Wonder about the design choices you made, more out of curiosity than anything. That sounds like a very fast wing for the size.

Looks a lot like the new AFS wings in-terms of overall shape, as well as the Phantom wings, definitely want to try one!

It wasn't me riding it..It was Robbie from Zulu fins. It is a joint venture between Zulu and myself. It will be sold under the Zulu brand and will replace his current foil.
I have designed the entire foil from scratch......I am a professional Industrial designer and worked for over 30 years as a car designer and have also been designing and selling boards and fins under my Brand Atomicsurf for a few years. Robbie makes my carbon fins so this is how it came about.
I use 3D CAD for modelling and all the foil sections are designed using Xflr5 which is a 2D CFD program. I have designed all the foil sections myself they are not the same as anything else on the market......hundreds of hours of analysis.
We have also made lots of prototypes.
The front mounting system is our own and has 2x M6 and 2X M8 screws and the screws are staggered across the centerline for better support. We are looking at adapters so the wings could be used on other brands fuselages.
We are going to launch with 3 wings for both WinD and WinG and 3 fuselage lengths..70, 102 and 110. the 110 has the mast further back proportionally so more like a plus fuselage. the wing sizes are 900cm2, 1220 cm2 and 1460cm2 and each is aimed at a different style Freerace 900, Freeride 1220 and Freemove 1460. the plan will be to do some dedicated 'Fast" smaller wings which I am working on but we just can't do everything at once. The current wings are fast but a little lifty for super high speeds...aimed at getting up easily and having a stable ride......when you push really hard they can foil out...the race stuff will be lower lift.
The stabs have been designed as race / slalom stabs are are super low drag, very, very fast profile. 198CM and 240CM both high aspect

Its great fun and I have learned so much about foil design...I initially made the mistake of going for super efficient high lift to drag profiles but they were too lifty, so it has been trial and error to understand what you need for the different sizes and speeds. they are pretty complex wings with varying profiles along their span and varying twist..

Robbie is sending me the first wing from the 900 tool next week so I am so excited to take it for a fang...

OK...here are some shots of my most recent proto......the fuselage is almost production, the only difference is the mast goes back another 10mm and the zinc anode is partially tucked under the front wing. The front wing is an earlier 900cm2..too lifty...the new one has a lower lift profile and a plan view which is not so straight on the leading edge. Outer layer will be all plain weave no spread tow. The stab is a hand made proto of the final 198cm and the mast is also out of the proto tool, production mast is slightly shorter in the chord near the bottom and a lower drag profile. Will also be plain weave on the outside not biax .
Still to finalise graphics and a few small details but almost there...

















Hoping to have a small production run in October...we will see. Going to be very low volume as I hand finish every fuselage myself...will see how it goes.

hi, what is the cost of a wing. At what minimum wind can you take off? What is the maximum wing speed of 1200? I had a wing 1200 zulu profile very thin but took off from 9-10 knots.

As someone who has torqed wings free from the fuselage on two different brands I really appreciate your connection with the wide saddle and offset M8 bolts. I am still baffled that many big brands don't get this.

I weigh 90 kg and on a wing of 930 cm2 the span of a meter with a sail of 9.5 take off on a gust of 8-9 knots and can fly with a wind of 7-8 knots.

also I've been thinking about the foil design relative to sail design. Obviously modern sails have highly refined twist profiles to depower as needed. How can we achieve these same flex characteristics in a production foil? hopefully without a tension line (downhaul) running through the foil.

Berowne......Yes Zulu are in Capetown . I have a brand called Atomicsurf and design then have built windsurf fins. My G10 fins are made by Tribal in The Netherlands and Robbie at Zulu makes my Carbon fins. Robbie wanted some G10 fins so we have ended up doing a brand share...he sells my G10 fin designs under his brand and I sell one of his carbon fins as well as the ones I designed under my brand.
Robbie has a foil he sells that was designed back in 2018. I wanted to do a foil for my brand and asked him to make the mast and wings for me. He asked if he could update his foil with my new design and after much discussion we ended up deciding to sell this new foil under his brand only as he has global distributors and I do not.
So the foil is totally designed by me in Melbourne. Robbie will make all the carbon components. I have sourced everything else and at this point will hand finish all the aluminium parts myself and have them hard anodised here. I will service all the customers from Australia.

So it is OZ design with components sourced both globally and locally.

I want to mess around with active twist.....it will be tricky but maybe possible to induce some twist using layup and geometric twist.....something to experiment with anyway.... My wings have some built in twist, but yes some active twist if it worked would be great.


Back to the subject of this thread...I thought Robbies speed on the big wing was impressive...I would like to know if other people have done big speeds on big wings?

That would be interesting. I imagine you would be fighting vibration issues and have to set a hard design top speed.

Yep...tuning the twist would be the issue.....If you reduce the amount of biax or remove it completely from the layup in the wing tips they will twist but tuning it would be really difficult.

My Top Speeds using F4 foils. Sizes are cm2 area for front wings. (I've missed a few session on the 420).

The first 900 Freerace wing just came out of the production tool. So we now have the finished production tools for the 900cm2 Freerace wing and the 1220cm2 Freeride wing. Exciting!!! The 900 wing has a very 'racy" foil profile, very low drag at low AOA...the 1220 is does not have such a defined drag bucket.
As I mentioned even though I have designed the foil and will be making parts , it will not be sold under my Atomicsurf brand but under Robbies Zulu brand. I am working on the graphics around a theme created by Robbies friend Christo...the Zulu brand DNA is bold graphics.

Really like the new graphics!

The 900cm2 production wing had its first shakedown today. The report to me was ... its stable and easy, great glide through the gybe and a shade under 27 knots 2sec peak. Guys on Slalom boards struggled to keep up. I think its a tick......
