A video from the One Hour Classic on Garda has some of the best footage of foot work in foil jibes I have ever seen:
Being a rather slow learner, I have been quite puzzled by instructions to put the carving foot all the way to the outside, and to then step with the old front foot straight behind the back foot. It never worked for me this way, the board would always wobble like crazy or even flip. In the jibes in the video above,
every foiler steps differently: first a
small step with the back foot towards the board center, then a small step with the new front foot into the strap, then another small step (or two, or small hops) to bring the back foot to the outside. Makes perfect sense.
I went back and looked at several instruction videos again. They all focus on the initial placement of the carving foot, and most mention that the step back with the old front foot should be "heel to heel". The actual step back with the old front foot, however, is always a relatively small step to the centerline. Especially of the carving foot is far outside (which some but not all videos suggest), this step has to be a
small and
quick, or it will have the board move. The "heel to heel" advice together with the "place the back foot close to the rail" can be confusing here, since that requires a
large step on a wide board. The small steps shown by the top foilers in the Lake Garda video make a lot more sense.
