Exactly. Apparently there are some private camp grounds in Washington that are a bit more peaceful
Too funny, Vento sounds the same as in the 80's. We rolled in after dark and were thrilled to find a campsite. We did not realize it was only a few meters from the train track and a couple hours later I almost had a heart attack when a train rolled through. I thought it was going to come right through the tent .

There are are tracks along the river on both sides with very regular train traffic but you do get use to it. There are campsites away from the river that are more peaceful.
The gorge is awesome its has conditions for everyone. You just need to travel 30min to find big differences in wind strength. It also has so much more like mountain biking, hiking, heck you can even go snowboarding in the morning on Mount Hood and foil in the afternoon. I haven't been in years but from what I have heard the vibe is still pretty cool.
