Hi everyone, I'm having trouble to go past 20-21 knts as top speed. My setup Is:

Starboard Formula 162 converted foilbox
95 mast with 1000 front wing and 255 stab
Severne 7.8 reflex4

With 14-15 knots I can go comfortable, but top speed is so so (19 to 21 Max)

When you say pushing front foot harder, it also means your body goes forward a lot, right?

Any tips with similar setups Is appreciated.

Most race foilers have a 1000 for light wind course racing with sails up to 9 meters.
Max speed maybe somewhere near 24 mph.
The fast foiler in PWA is using a 430 front foil.
Perhaps a smaller front wing is needed.

Yes I know, watched the whole Tiberias PWA. But that's slalom and with much more wind (25+).

Im trying to push one setup for a broad wind range (less money spent, and less carrying stuff).

I think with these gusty conditions, gusts of 15knts I should put the -0.5 spacer on the stab, any thoughts?

What does it feel like when you are getting to that speed? Comfortable? What is your position relative to the wind? What fuselage?

As LeeD says, that's a large wing. You may be getting close to the top end potential of that wing. A 900 would be slightly faster, but it depends on if you're after raw speed or also want upwind/downwind potential. Not sure if the 900 or 800 would be better for you, honestly, or if you want to think of an even smaller wing that would be more for just slalom style reaching back and forth.

I can sail in those winds on the 900 and the 115+ fuselage and get similar speeds, where the control starts challenging me, and I'm on a 9.0 4 cammed HGO. It helps to get more downwind, with tweaking the angle depending on how strong the gusts are, but it starts to get scary for me. Upwind is slower, but easier to stay dry. Reaching can be extremely scary depending on how gusty.

This video is also great. The hip movement demo made a big difference in my control:

Thanks for this, I feel really as you described. Upwind good angle and comfy (and dry), reaching scary...... sometimes the board heads upwind suddenly. Trying to control this with back foot heel locked.

Downwind I can de-power going a bit too low, unhooked.

I think I need to give more downhaul tension and have an much loose leach.....

I'll try to ask a friend for an 800 front to see the difference.

Ooh yeah, that'll be fun to try. Playing with the shim with more negative angle will make you faster, but you'll have to play with it to see how you like it. The 800 will likely make a bigger difference than the shim angle by quite a bit.

The reason I replied is that most of my foiling is done with a 600 sq cm foil, and 210 stab.
I am slow, maybe 20 mph, barely 3 faster than my 1220 foil.
Also, that giant sail of yours is all drag, no top speed.

That setup is designed, as others have said, for lift going hard up and downwind, not really for reaching powered up. I've heard very good foilers say the 1000 wing will hit a wall at some point where the 900 and 800 can easily go faster.

Definitely try a shim to lessen the stab angle. I was in a similar place as you, hitting a wall with a similar set up. Flattening the stab a half degree was noticeable. A smaller wing will give you much more range once that fits your budget.

Hahaha you're right. But on this side of the worldmap it's pretty difficult to get windsurfing stuff. Only travelling and bringing yourself, which is just starting again now...

One of my buddies with the same setup reaches 26/27 mph. The 900 is faster but where I sail the 1000 is king (very light and gusty). I generally use the 0 shim so with my stab I have a total of -2. You should try putting the -1 or -2. You haven't said what fuselage you are using. I also have the 95 plus and I don't really use it much with the 1000 wing. By the way, I am not into racing. also check the mast base position

So 25 mph Is something around 21-22 knots, right? I'm not so far from that, only that not so comfortable over 19 knts

Every wing has its range, just like sails, when you get to the upper range of a wing it is easier to breach due to gusts making the wing give too much lift, at the lower end for a wing you need stable wind otherwise you have to work to stay on the foil as the wind drops below the minimum speed. And those effects differer based on the size of the wing, so a big wing like the AFS F1080 will be more susceptible to breaching at the high end, and stay in flight easier at the low end versus the F770 which can be controlled easier at the high end with front foot pressure but at the low end looses lift easier.

My max speed with my racing kit (formula, 9.0 Phantom RF, Lokefoil PWA race) and the Large wing (872cm2, but similar power to the SB1000) was something like 28 knots. Make sure you build up speed and power across the wind. And do the 'speed' catapult / bear away once fully powered up and hitting the next gust. After the catapult, dont go too low. Somewhere right in the middle between VMG downwind and a beam reach is the right direction. I personally used the same settings as I use for up/down racing, but only tried slalomish courses a few times with that setup because my mate had a new slalom frontwing proto and wanted to compare.

Important is you dont feel like you're forcing the board / foil with your legs, or your boom with your arms. Your weight should totally be on the harness, leaving the board to 'do its thing'. If any part of the setup costs a lot of energy, its not being efficient and you will not go fast.
