Hi all,

Just wondering how to go about painting the wing tip in the photo below where paint has worn off. What sort of paint to use ? Multiple coats ? Sanding ? Any other preperation needed ?

And wondering, do the sorts of scratches in the 2nd photo affect performance at all, and to what degree ?
Are they worth repairing ?

Thanks mate. I actually came across that video after I made this post. Found the marker at office works too.
Don't know about using the marker for my wingtips. It looks like it will work for the scratches though. Quick and easy too.

Would it not be better to fill scratches in the clear - with clear?

The carbon is black, and over that is a verrry thin layer of resin, then a clear spray. The scratches are in the clear layer so why fill them with black? And why fill with a product that is not used in watersports finishes? God knows what it is...

The video gives you a smooth wing - but now it has black lines all over it that should not be there!! You may as well paint the whole wing black, it would look better!

I'd rather do the (slightly) harder version - fill scratches with resin, block sand it flat, then clearcoat wing again. Invisible result - as the clear is filled with clear (not black) and farrrr more durable than whatever that crayon stuff is.

So many youtubes have 'solutions' with inappropriate products as the 'inventor' of this new idea simply doesn't know the right way

As to your wingtip Sambo, any old matte black and a matte clear. Bunnings rattle cans will do it, and look just fine..... but then will it devalue the wing.... ? At the moment you can see there is no structural repair. If I saw a re-paint on a wing tip wellllll maybe its been fixed with Spakfilla? Sometimes the choice is pro paint to really hide it, or leave it visible so people know its not a bodgy up

Thanks for that info. Good to know. What sort of resin should I use ? Any specific type of clear coat ?

The product in the you tube video is solidified paint.

Don't care about devaluing the wing etc. I thought painting the tips might prevent the exposed carbon from wearing when it occasionally grinds on the boggy bottom of the lake I foil on when taking off.

Do you spray the black on first then the clear ? And wet sand between coats and after the final coat ?

Any clear epoxy thst won't yellow
Cheapest for small jobs would be a UV set like solarez without fibre in it....or s jewellery making resin

Then its set in a couple mins and you can sand and clear coat

Flat black duramax, let it cure really well then lighy sand with 400 or 600 then duramax matte clear
Cheapest products with best chance of getting a good result

I really question filling with painty putty that would never truly set and its no quicker!

I have a foil that looks similar. As long as the leading edges are smooth it is hard to see how a few scratches would impact performance (unless you are racing in Pozo). Adding clear coat or other coatings will be purely cosmetic and will have no impact on performance, wing durability, or resale value. The wing will lose its value due to obsolescence long before you will scratch it enough to hurt performance.

Good point by NS .... so to clarify im talking about gouges into the gel coat exposing the carbon. Not scratches that are in the sprayed on clearcoat (paint) - which would be not worth fixing
If you did, simply a light sand and respray would be fine

Either way I'm not using crayon
