About to get my first foil board. Experienced Windsurfer but never tried foiling. 90 likilos. Would the Starboard Foil X 145 be a good board?

Thanks Martin

What foil are you purchasing and style of foiling are you going to do?

Something with a bit more width would be easier to uphaul in choppy conditions but otherwise should be good. I'm a bit heavier than you and the Severne alien 145 at 80 wide is perfect for me with the supercruiser and GTR foils.

Well the Supercruiser was designed for that board and is an excellent foil. It's very freeride/cruiser not a go fast foil.

The build quality is excellent and the mast is compatible with the freerace starboard gear.

I use the Starboard Foil Free-ride 125 paired with the slingshot i76. It has been a great board and foil combo to learn and progress on. I'm 80kg and use sails from 5.0 to 7.8 on this combo.

Martin, I started on a Formula board but didn't work comfortably for me with SS 76. Went to a SS Dialer 130 board which was awesome with my SS foil because they matched perfectly but 70width. Now on Patrik 145 85width and Patrik race foil. Now I'm super happy and my board foil combo works perfectly. The extra width, 85 and strap box placement are all correct and just work. The SS Dialer was just a little narrow for my big feet & weight. If you look for matched combo then you'll prob not go too wrong. I started on small sails and now I'm using my good NP twin cam sails, now I'm less likely to destroy them. Lol.

The Stingray 140 is, in my opinion, one of the best boards out there for beginner foilers, but in no means boring nor will you out grow this board. You can freerace on it with a fast foil and 8.5 sail or carve and freeride on it with a 5.0, depending on what foil you use. And that is where the track mount comes in handy, you have a large choice of foils when using track mounts, always find the right balance bij moving the foil. I use Fanatic Flow foil 1000 for freerace and the 1250 for freeriding with smaller sails. Board is very forgiving when breaching and plenty of width to create stable platform, double inserts for footstraps to find best stance. I have foiled many boards and foils but Stingray with Flow 1250 will get you foiling in no time in the most relaxed possible way.

+1 for the Stingray 140. I use mine with AFS and LP freeride foils.

I have the 2020 Foil-X 145. It's great. I had a Wizard 125 before. It is much lighter and still a compact shape. I needed more volume (I currently weigh 113kg) to slog in light to no wind. I have the Supercruiser, but the SS Hoverglide I had before worked well. I mainly use 5.9m2 Freek and 5.2m2 S-1. I do not like to foil in strong winds, I prefer to freestyle windsurf.

One thing that would give me pause about the Starboard is the rear footstraps look quite a bit forward of the foil box. No doubt works fine with recommended Starboard foil, but others may need tweaking.

Why would you want to get the Supercruiser and use the mast for the Freerace? Wouldn't it be cheaper just to go for the SB new modular system? What would be the benefit?

Because the SC and FR setups offer different capabilities but share a mast system. The parts are available individually.
