its always so windy when the Freo doctor kicks in, full on power carving....so awesome

Got in a nice 4.7 session yesterday and channeled some of this energy and good vibes into my riding. Our wind chop is smaller but still fun to make some curves happen. No matter how many times I do it, still surprising how much range a 4.7 has on a foil 10-25 kts.

there are two main reasons for skilled windfoilers to try winging

1) to realize how easy wing foiling is
2) So people stop asking you if/when you will try winging

All I get these days is when are you going to try winging? At least they have stopped asking me when I am goint to try kites!

Having mostly moved over to winging I can tell you why! In the same conditions you have more options:

1) Ride the waves unpowered in a pure surfing style without a sail interfering with your view of the wave

2) Ride the waves in a powered up style (see Alex Aguera in )

3) Get big floaty jumps on the way out!

I've wind foiled on decent waves but it really doesn't compare to 1)

Why I'm all in with windfoiling;
Carving power using mast-foot pressure, fast s-turn downwinding.
Cranking "rail" turns and speed DTL on waves.
Upwind and downwind speed.
Quick easy waterstarting.
Leash-free.
Reasonable control in crashes by holding on to the boom which keeps the foil away.
Ability to grovel back when the wind drops.
Easily cover large distances to explore or sail back from downwinders.
Longevity of wavesails.

Windfoiling is becoming an outlier so even more cool

We've got a group of wingers here and a few kite foilers. We have many foiling days year round, but the conditions on any given day can be highly variable. They spend a lot of time in the water in the lulls. They stay pretty close to the launch area for that reason. Windfoiling with 114 board, I can always get home and stay out of the cold water. I like to travel far downwind/upwind. I have been down wind when the wind died. Slogging for a half hour is not fun, but at least I can get back.

I envy you guys with consistent winds and ocean swell.

Even when I wind foil I get asked why don't I wing?.. I'm like well I do both, but this particular day and given this wind direction wind foiling is far better, then I get a confused look?

@simonp65 I think it depends on the day (wind and swell direction), sometimes I get more quality swells rides on a wind foil than wing.

If the wind switches to cross onshore winging kinda sucks and you spend an enormous amount of energy trying to get out of wind shadows and because you're generally foiling at slower speeds you don't always have enough power to get over the swell line and end up in no mans land within the given set.
