Hi

Is anyone able to help or advise on a CAD front wing design? I have someone that can cut for me but I can't design a step file as I do not have the massively expensive software available.

Lots of free high end CAD software out there, Fusion 360 or Onshape if you want 100% web based are probably the two best.

Actually I just realised I did this is Solidworks, because I was having issues getting the shapes to generate in Fusion360 and Onshape. You may struggle to generate accurate wing geometry in Fusion360/Onshape, particulary if you want to do anything with dihedral/sweep/twist/winglets etc.

Ahhh crap...thats exactly what a freefoil wing needs is anhedra/dihedral, sweep and washout..... meh.

I'm not sure what you consider expensive, but Rhino3D is pretty inexpensive & very powerful for those type of shapes. i used to use it allot but switched to Solidworks for it's mechanical design advantages. You can also download a 30day free trial & I believe it will export STEP even in the free version.

+ 1 for Rhino. I can give you some tips and or share some models to help.

I think Rhino would definitely be a way to go, but need to pay a lot of attention to getting accurate surfaces.

Might have to try Onshape/Solidworks again to see if they have improved their tools for complex surfaces. I've also not played around with the surfacing tools extensively, so there may be an approach in there that works.

As always with most of these tools there's many ways to achieve the same ends, and sometimes it's not always particularly obvious.

I can draw in autocad 2D. and 3D is too lazy to teach it is easier to pay a freelancer 10 dollars for a 3D model.

Well, you must have $10.... surely you can just find a freelancer to do the hard work for you..... Good luck with that.

I've been modeling boat stuff in CAD for decades and it is not easy. The complex shapes of these foils make them a challenge to model in any software. It takes practice, just like anything else worth doing. If you go the freelancer route make sure they understand that very small differences in sectional shape and thickness have huge differences in perfomance.

I don't need freelancers. MM7 made two 3D models for the wing 800 and 1000. I ordered a 1200 wing from Zulu fins carbon fiber, not plywood or some strange plastic for a 3D printer.

What boat modelling software do you use? Just curious

Rhino for 20 years now. I was trained on naval architecture based programs at school but in the field it seemed the boss always had the hardware dongles when I needed it so I bought a license of Rhino and never looked back. With Rhino and the ORCA plug in (for hydrostatics and stability calcs) I have never had a task that requires any other software. The boat specific software was only good at boat shapes where Rhino can do the boat shapes and everything else. Rhino is easy to learn and the price is reasonable.
