I'm 214 pounds and more or less 235 with the dry suit ect , so I wondered what board sizes guys like me are using . I'm on a Wizard 150 and up to 5.8 it is fine but from 7.0 to 8.5 I think It could have slightly more volume .

Is there a good windfoil board review somewhere ?

I also use the Wizard 150, but with the Ezzy-Hdya Sport 8.1. However I'm 190 in my birthday suit. There are higher displacement race foil boards out there. All of them hard on the wallet.

I am 6 foot 4 and 205 pounds without gear. I have the Levitator 160 and am very happy with it. But honestly I would like 200 Liters!

I am the same weight and I built a home brew board (6.5' x 34" x 180l) to get the volume I needed with out the massive foot print of the race boards. The boards mentioned above make sense and you might also look for a used formula and get jiggy with it.

I'm the same size exactly and use an old 95cm Formula board with an i84. It's fine for now, but I do have a custom convertible on the way - 91 by 240cm and around 160 liter - for use with big slalom sails and either a fin or a foil. I've ridden the Levitator 150 and found it had plenty of float but when I touched down I tended to stuff the nose. Really overall I preferred the Wizard 125 just a little harder to uphaul in chop. My 95cm board will carry an 8.5 easily (I've even tried it with a 10.0 and. a foil) but the Slingshot wing doesn't really do any better with a big sail than with a 7.0. The really big rigs seem to be best with high-aspect race foils.

If you are wanting to ease into this without spending a lot of money at the outset, you can use any old formula board. 95-100cm wide, 160 liters of float, strong deep tuttle finbox, light weight.

My limited-quiver one-board solution for when I visit my daughter in Florida is a formula board. Works fine.

150L is pretty big. Which wing are you using?

Maybe increase your wing surface area then you wont need such large sails.

Yes this this quite a big board , in very light wind and crossed chop maybe it could be good to have some more floatation ?? or wider . I'd like a lighter board and will be on the market to renew my Wizard soon .

Regarding the sail size , I go directly from the 8.5 to 5.7 , the very light 5.7 rig is amazingly good in light air with some pumping or the help of a wave . I have a 7.0 and never use it .

Yep. Listen I am not going to be looping or doing any kind of zany freestyle antics anytime soon. There is no surf where I live. I'll be happy mowing the lawn and trying a foil 360 every once in a while. So why not make the uphaul process as easy as possible?. We are not riding the board- we are riding the foil. The board just helps get us onto foil. At 205 dry (6'4 so not round...) my 160 Levitator still needs some attention to keep it evenly afloat. Especially with a wet 7.0 sail.

I think in the sport of wind surfing it has always been cool to say," yeah I was totally lit on my 4.0 sail and 20 liter board.....". Kinda like how people used to brag about how long their ski's were.

I just want to uphaul as easily as possible and get back on foil.

Give me a 250 liter board the same shape as my Levitator - just make it thicker to absorb the extra volume.

I should probably add that at one time I could uphaul, but once I learned how to water start I guess I lost my skills.....

I'm 195# and foil a 122L board all the time with a 109L board about to take its place. I mostly waterstart and I must admit I like the smaller boards once I'm flying. We don't generally lack for wind and I could easily fin sail a 7.0 on most light days.

That said I do want a high volume board for those really light wind days with flat water when it can feel magical to get going on the slightest gust.

The latest novenove and exocet freeride foilboards are gonna be huge (~190L) in terms of volume, they are the same in terms of shape, so pick the one you like the colours of ;).

Ofcourse you can go PD hydrofoil or a SB177 for 220+ liters of fun ;).

I could not explain it any better , this is exactly what I think , yesterday morning the wind died to 5 knots and I kept tacking , helicopter tack, sinker jibe with the 150 so yes I can sail this way but there is no reason to bother with a semi sinker for light air , nothing to proove to do so . From 18 knots I can use the Wizard 125 no problem but under 15 we need to float in order to get 5 knots quicker and then pump to get on the foil . We are not in the Cricket weight .David Ezzy is a good example with his custom board .

In how little wind do you guys go out? I am currently using a Severne Alien 125l with a 76 Slingshot foil. Weight is 110kgs (approx 220 pounds)... biggest sail I use is a 6.2 Severne Blade.... I can uphaul that sail and get going in about 8-10 knts. with some pumping.I think the only way for me to get going in less would be a bigger wing and a 9+ sqm sail. But can't see how that would be any fun.

5 to 15 knts with goods holes , When you rig an 8 meters and up this is where the board behaviour changes , I don't complain about a 150 L but looking ahead to switch this board I'd like to get the more appropriated board for my weight and light wind . The lightest possible and slightly more volume . It looks like there will be a big price tag though . Hence the question : which board are heavy people using with sails from 7.0 to 8.5 ?

I have various sails from 3.5 up to the 6.4 Naish Lift but tend to use the 5.7 lift as my light wind sail.
The board is stable enough to uphaul, bob around in very light winds and short enough to use with a 3.5m sail in 30 knots plus wind.

Beginners tip would be nice floaty board with the biggest wing you can find and the lightest simplest sail around 5.5 -6.0m.

At 93 kg, I foil with a SS i76/42 and 6.8 with adjustable outhaul, all over an old formula board of 160 liter. I can pump up to flight in 10 kts wind and fly it to 17 kts wind.

Those were the exact conditions on Wednesday (24 miles) and yesterday--Friday (13 miles) this past week on the west coast of Florida. Flight speed between 12 mph and 21 mph (I use a cheap and simple GPS watch). The i76 has a lot of range.

Above 17kts I change to a 5.0 sail.

Yeah we are probably talking about diminishing returns here, but I do kind of feel a little more umph for those super light wind days with the i99 might be good. But what matters is how much forward speed I can generate with a given period of time pumping, not total sail area. I guess it's possible I can get more out of pumping the 5.7 than the bigger 6.4. Although as much as I love the lifts, if I see a 6.4 on significant sale I will pounce on it just to find out for myself

I have the exact same feeling about my Lift 5.7 , such a good sail to pump . I always rig this sail first , if I need a little more I go all the way to 8.5 , I have a good 7.0 in between but it stays in the bag 5.7 is always the winner .

I think with the very large surface area slow foils there is less need for board size to get going. With the higher aspect foils having much higher top end but significantly less low end you need to glide of the higher volume to get them up to speed.
Of course there is nothing saying you can't go high volume with a big surfy foil but it's probably not as important.

I second, third or whatever an old formula board. All you need. I use a starboard race foil.

I found an old formula and I'm going to take a look at it tomorrow . Thanks . At worst it will end up as a beach bar .
