just wondering if it is worth buying a full deck grip for a short board? as i am sick of always losing traction after my wetsuit rubs the wax an takes the stickiness away. Just after tips or comments as to whether it is in fact better or after a couple of months its becomes inaffective as the grip gets worn?

cheers

I tend to use just a rear tail pad and wax on ALL my boards . I notice if i use wax under my back foot the deck starts to sink on either side of the stringer and I get this Killer "Bunyen"(if thats how its spelt) across the arch of my back foot. Causes some real pain.
Another advantage of the tail pad is thats its easier to get ur foot in position on the sweet spot .I tend to use Squid grip. DOnt worry about ur deck grip wearing. Id be more worried about the glue under ur grip letting go over time. Sometimes the corners can peel a little.

If ur wax is coming off from ur wetty , put more on or take out a comb .
I once surfed and only once a board with front deck grip. I ended up leaving the water with my guts red raw and almost bleeding.

I'd ask old mate Barton Lynch or Dooma why the full deck grip. MAn I still cant figure out what they were thinking???

Wax for sure. As soon as it starts to look bad you can peel it off. but you can't do that with a full deck grip

Looks like I go against the grain on this one;

Recently I put a full deck grip on my new 6'2" Resin8 ( still a ridiculously light board 62mac - I disagree about your weight claim anyway - if you just use heaps of little bits of scrap foam-grip )

My deck grip is made with lots of little triangles/squares - scraps of foam-grip.

I'd been having grip issues riding SUP with the standard foam-grip - guys over on Hawaii had come up with a way better level of grip using well spaced small scraps & I was blown away by how much it improved the grip on my SUP.... So I was then interested in how it would work for prone-surfing my 6'2".

It turned out as I was hoping - an amazing new level of grip!

I reckon I have 70% more control, & I can feel where I am standing on my board 100% better than with soft/hard/slippery wax.

No melting, combing, no more scraping off dirty old gunk every couple of months.

It's full-time wettie weather where I surf so I dont have any issues with rashes

give it a try - dont worry about the surf-fashionistas, there'd be no innovation in surfing if anyone listened to the boring old status-quo-quoters - too scared to try anything different

Wax for me with a Tailpad.
When I was a grommet I had the full Gorilla Grip, just like Barton and Dooma.
I don't know if they lost their nipples too

Wax + rear tailpad.

And I have never heard of a tailpad "wearing out". They will outlast the board.

Mate..if full deck grip was the go you'd see the pro's (including freesurfers) hitting it up. As some of the guys have already said if you ever want to breast feed again I'd go the wax.

Wax on wax off is part of basic board maintenance.

I give my board a "wax on" and a scrape before every surf and I wax off probably every month or so depending on the form. I

I find wax way more sticky then deck grip anyhow I even go as far as dropping a little on the tail pad for extra stick (you'll see most of the pro's doing this also)

i put a Tailpad on one of my boards (an early performance board from Maddog, 6'4 with celtic designs). it was great, but ever since then i always wonder where is the best place - slightly forward, or.. because the foot position moves, is it best to have some room to manouver.

re/ wax on, wax off..

giving the board a good clean does wonders for glide factor.
must not use boiling water cos that lifts the glass.
aight peace :)

Wax with back tail grip.

My first board had full grip and use to get big rashes when surfing with no shirt, plus it doesn't look any good.

Just like the back grip to feel where my back foot is. I find softer wax is also better, yuo have to change it more often and it melts easier but you get a better grip.
