Hey Daniel,

We probably need to know more about your abilility, what type of waves you surf, and what you are looking for out of a board... and maybe what type of board your current 7'6" is (ie, is it a fun-board, mini-mal, or more of a shortboard/gun shape).

Regards,

Most will say speak to your local shaper(s) and it is sound advice but if you are after something off the rack I'll put my vote in for one of the McCoy Nugget variations. Pretty user friendly boards and plenty of float but they still turn really well. A Vic mate of mine reckons they suit the waves around your area as well. I often ride a 6'0 Potbelly Nugget and I reckon they are great boards for sh1t surfers (which I am and you more than likely are too). I reckon a 6'6 standard Nugget would suit your weight and skill level.

I am just under 6 foot and 85kg, have a 6'5 with a bit of volume up front and low nose rocker. I sourced a board in this range second hand from a local shaper, paid half price of new board, so much fun to surf - like a wind up toy! I surf mainly beach breaks and small to mid size reef breaks, sure is nice to be able to duck dive on the solid days on the beachies, my other boards are a 9 foot Mal and 7'6 fun board so it fits in nicely.

If you've been riding a fun board don't go for a big drop like 6'5 shortboard - you're giving away volume and shape. Drop a couple inches around the 7ft mark and go for a bigger shortboard shape. This should give you a taste of how boardshape change and volume results in the change in responsiveness etc. I don't think you should go to a shaper yet. No point wasting your dollars as you are still starting out and you'll get more benefit from figuring things out yourself. Troll gumtree and ebay around your area or even rubbish tip days for boards around the shape that others give you advice on. Grab them and have a ride. After a while you'll start to grasp what you like and don't. Once you get your groove going, then hit up your local shaper. Beware though, it's a dangerous path down to buy boards and boards for the rest of your life...
