anybody use board racks on a scoot or motorbike? i see a few around,never with boards on them though...

So how do they go when the wind is blowing,or just in everyday riding?

what racks are you using if they are any good.

I use them all the time bro. The best ones I have ever seen are made by Edy at Island Motorcycles. The fold away ones cost approx. AUD $65. If you are coming to visit me I can line you up to get some. I shall take some pics of mine when I get back. Fold away is the only way to go. Re wind etc I never have any dramas but generally do not do more than about 80km/h - which I imagine from your place to the beach is not going to happen anyway

Have done it on a Suzi djebel ( think DR250 on roids) by fitting a lock box with a small bracket on the rear rack, a bar across the upper forks extending to the left as far as the handle bars with a hole /ring for a hose clip ( from a mine site). Put 2 clips through board bag, fore and 2/3rds back, onto your bracket and bar. An Ocky strap from front clip beside and under and onto lower forks will stop board flap. Works a treat on many bikes in varying guises.
got a way on my current steed too, but can't say too much about it

from my understanding it is,it does have something to do with length of the board and size of the bike.

on the wind side i read something on the net that made sense. It was saying that the wind that hits you when you are riding without the rack is the same as riding with one,as you are a solid object and the board does not make you more solid as it much the same size as the bike.
...unless you have a longboard which is obviously much bigger than the bike,then it will act like a sail

The board must not protrude beyond the handlebars, nor more than 30 cm past the back of the bike, whilst not obscuring lights, etc, obviously. Little known WA law. I'd hate to have to challenge a cop on it though. Still, I've never been pulled up on two continents.

The way i read Busters post its more about what you can't do. So id guess theres really no definitive law its more a case of technicalities..

Out of curiosity what length could you get away with, IE how long is a bike plus 30cms approx..

I see kids riding around with their body boards under their arses on scooters daily. It looks rather dangerous but they all say they get less wind resistance that way

I had the rack put on a couple months ago and no probs whatsoever .. The board usually sits much further forward and barely protrudes out the back .. this photo was taken after my son was sitting on the scooter playing with it so I slid the board back out of the way and forgot to slide it forwarrd again for the photo.. Wetsuit & towel fit under seat neatly.. The rack manufacturer says it can carry boards up to 10' but I dont think I would be game putting my 9' 6" SUP on it .. am away for a few weeks but will put it on to try and post a photo to show.

I rode a scooter for a couple of years with racks on it on the goldy and never had an issue. Rode past cops dozens of time ad they never blinked.......wind never bothered me , though if it was 20knt i wasnt surfing anyway so less than that and you are all good.........only downside was the racks were on the same side as the exhaust so if I had my board wax side in it would melt a little on the way, turn board out and problem solved........winter rides home are pretty ****ty though....

It's illegal without a permit from Dept of Transport to cover the modifications, but in saying that only the biggest of tossers could talk a cop into caring enough to give a ticket or defect notice.

In the mid 90's I had SR500 with a homemade board rack. Fabricated from 1/2" square tube bolted fairly low on front down tube and to the added gear sac rack on the back, mounted on the left to avoid the kickstart.
Didn't seem to comprise handling, I drove at hi way speeds with boards from 6'to 7'ft.
The only problem for me was having my heavy riding gear at the beach and not wanting to lug it 1km up the beach to Lefties!

I had the same problem. Fortunately where I used the racks most was isolated and the few who surfed there all knew each other and looked out for each other.

I did leave my riding gear with the bike, never got ripped off but never 100% sure.
