hey all

I just spent the last couple of months in indo surfing everyday. unfortunately half way through the trip, im guessing i either tore or strained a muscle in my rib area. hurts from the front muscle in between the rib the back sort of wing area.

Anyone got any suggestions for rehab, dos and donts? any exercise i can be doing to keep fitness up.

Its definetely not broken or chipped just muscular as i had an xwray in indo to confirm.

Can anyone recommend a good physio in perth? perhaps one with good knowledge about surf injuries.

thanks all

Don't know that you'll find a 'surf specific' physio unless they surf themselves...

Suggest looking for a physio connected to a swimming club or association - as the paddling/swimming motion are quite similar.

Just a thought.

I stacked it a beauty on the skatey a couple of weeks ago. To keep a long story short I twisted and strained the muscles at the back of the shoulder. It settled but the surf came up a couple of days later. i spent the day on the rock and strained the muscles in the front of my shoulder. I have trouble lifting my arm above my head at the moment. I went to the physio who was an ex surfer and gave acupunture a go. It had an instant effect and releived the pain but after a couple of days i am back to square one. I might give that bloke in Cott a go.

yeah i had to have about 2 and a bit weeks off while in indo the pain was so intense. i eventually got back in the water, sorta sucked it up for a few days and it went out again back to those sharp pains when breathing etc.

my trip was coming to an end so i gave it three days, massaged it out, took lots of iboprofen, muscle relaxants and got back out there,

been back in perth (without surfing) for two weeks now, still a bit of a numbing pain. pretty sure if i get back out there it will fire up again so just wanna get it sorted.

thanks for your suggestions..

I dunno if I know my stuff but I'd strongly suggest that you rest up instead of exercise. You've already gone out once when your chest wasn't quite ready and the healing process is probably gonna take longer cos of it. Injuries need rest to heal.

Cos its chest related any pressure is really not going to be any good hey. The best you could do is something low intensity and maintain a healthy diet. Go for a walk or some light cycling? Then once its ok, you'd start doing exercises to strengthen that area again.

But the best advice I can give is to not only see your physio but your doctor too. Those guys will know what to do.

John Annear is the man, he's been fixing me up for over 15 years. Call 9382 9600. As for the injury, sounds like rib cartilage which is inflamation, so onto the Inflam drugs and some rest. John will work out a re-hab program for you and you'll be back in the water no time. Base at St John of God Subiaco. Dezza
