hey guys currently riding a 7'6 by 21 3/8 by 3, i'm wanting to get something shorter and quicker. I tried out a 6'10 with around the same thickness but found it to be not as responsive as i wanted. what kind of dims should i be looking at? found a 6'4 x 19.38 x 2.916 that i'm pretty keen on but would that be too short? cheers guys

You haven't had much of a response because it's kind of an open ended question. Lot's more to boards than just the sizes and to give our opinions we need some context - your ability, weight, age, paddle fitness, and location.

You can get feedback from others, but you essentially have two logical options:

1. Speak to a shaper about ordering something that will suit.

2. Punt on different second hand boards until you find what you like.

so in regards to my ability i'm currently learning to turn, snap off the lip and stuff like that. I'm 18 and weigh around 85kg and have pretty good paddle fitness, although i live over an hour from where i surf being the victorian west coast (torquay region). Thanks guys!

I tried to do the same thing as you and jump from a 7'6 to a 6'4 last year. In retrospect I wish I had tried a few boards in the size range between as I think I would have improved far quicker. You can only improve if you're catching waves, and going too short too fast could hinder you.

Maybe hire/demo a few boards from one of the shops in Torquay until you find something that suits. If you are progressing that fast don't waste you coin on a fresh deck as you will be looking for another board in 6 months time. Just buy second hand from Gumtree or eBay. You probably won't lose anything in resale value either if you look after them.

If you are going to go shorter, maybe look at boards that are 20/21" wide so have a bit of volume and stability.

Just my 5c worth.

thanks for the advice! the dims i mentioned are from a board on gumtree, its just really hard to find something thicker and wider secondhand. As i said i tried out a 6'10 and found it to still be a bit big, thats why i was looking at the 6'4. still unsure though!

Might be a quick fix rather than waiting for something to come up on the internet.

yer i've been to a fair few, found them to be overpriced compared to what i've seen on gumtree and the like.

Othere than that Anglesea Surf Centre have a really good range on 2nd handies http://www.secondhandsurfboards.com.au/surfboards.html and you can check alot of them online before you head down
