Went in December last year. There was only one break working called Ral's, first 2 session 2-4 foot cleanish, then after that 2-4 foot on/cross shore. Still surfed twice everday in bath warm water with only a few mates and a few cool guys we met at the camp, longish rides but a bit fat. All the local guides said Feb-April is better time of year. If long-longs, nusa left or piccaninis are working it would be all time.
When not surfing did some awesome snorkelling, a couple of lazy bush walks, drank heaps of cheap booze, ate some great food, snoozed in the hammock, everything you want in a tropical holiday.
One highlight was surfing 1 foot piccaninnis with all the local kids out on planks of wood and bits of foam.
Pack your boards well, I think everyone had dings of varying degree either on the way there or back.
All the local surf guide/boat drivers were chasing boardies so take some extra old pairs that you dont mind trading them for souveniers.
See if you can organise your trip to not have the lay over in Moresby.
Leave heaps of time between flight transfers (more than normal).
If you do stopover in Moresby dont walk around the streets, no matter how safe people say it is, a guy got shot in the airport while we were in Morsby (we werent actually at the airport thankfully) and a south african guy we were speaking to who works in the mines got mugged at knife point in the main street in broad daylight.
In Moresby the yacht club is the go for a decent meal but get your Hotel to drive you there in the courtesy bus.
We got skunked on the surf and was a lot of travelling (Melb-Bris-Morsby-Kavieng)but had an excellent trip and was well worth going. You should have an awesome time.
