Heat it up with a hairdryer and soften the glue, then use wax and grease remover to take off the extra glue on the board

Haha let me have it for a week. My bloody tailpad keeps peeling itself off...pain in the arse.
So opposite to this question, what sort of glue would be recommended to help stick it back down. Only the back half is coming off...

I use standard 'contact cement' (carpet glue) to fix it - and mineral turpentine to remove the excess glue (as Doggie says - using a hair drier to soften it up and remove carefully with stanley trimmer, or soft-edged scraper).

That's the advice from the guy that shapes my boards. Suitable for epoxy or glass and cheap. A tin is about $7 or $8.

I can't stand tail pads slowly coming off so usually I rip them off by hand at the first sight of them slipping. Makes for an ugly board with black chunks but who cares. Just rip at the thing. I appreciate all the advice here. Nearly all my boards have no tail pad, I believe in eliminating variables which can be unreliable. But now that I've read this I might think twice. Latest board I used aralidite to stick it back on, hasn't come off yet but only been a month.

Selleys Kwik Grip. I've used it a few times with no problems. I just used it the other day on a grip. Stuck it down one afternoon after a surf (when I noticed it peeling - about 5cm x 5cm corner). Didn't dry the grip, didn't prep the board or grip (left on the old glue), didn't keep the sticking surfaces apart for ~20min, just smeared some in there and left a brick on it overnight. Didn't leave it to cure for 24hrs or whatever, surfed the next morning and it stuck perfectly like it does every time. The only issue is it cures yellow and some usually oozes out so if you're a perfectionist you need to clean it up a bit. I don't care personally, just a bit of a wipe with a paper towel.

Legion I love your style! Loved your posts about SUPs in the past and love your style for fixing boards! I know I've said it before, but you've got my vote for P.M. of surfing!

Bit of elbow grease and a stanley knife to remove the pad (careful you don't scratch or do anything to the board though!) then Mineral turps to remove the glue. Made for an 'enjoyable' afternoon for me.
