hey guys,

Im looking at getting my own board after a couple of my mates boards all year. I mainly surf 1-2ft pretty weak waves and I've got the basics and can do some pretty ordinary turns.

I've been reading online about epoxy (ive been offered a 6'6 epoxy board) and the shorter fish boards. Both seem to be good for intermediates and are both said to be easy paddling.

What's the go?

Cheers

As I understand it, an old school poly board begins to break down from the moment it cures, where as an epoxy gets stronger the longer it expels its gases. Fish VS epoxy is like asking diesel VS 4WD. A fish is the outline and volume (amongst others) of a style of board. Arguably easy enough to learn on though.
The 6'6" could be a goer, but how much do you weigh? 1-2 foot surf??

Word for the wise, compare the weight of a few different epoxies. Anything heavy probably has water in it. Steer clear.

Yea I get that and thats what i was trying to say with the 6'6 epoxy board. I just worded it awfully, but to be expected on a saturday night haha.

What i was trying to get across was a I was offered a 6'6 epoxy, and that from what i have read on the net having a standard shortboard shape epoxy board can have benefits for a beginner/intermediate such as easy to paddle/catching waves and stable. The same characteristics are suggested with a fish style board (with i assume a poly-glass build).

So my question is any reason i should go for a fish shape board over the standard shape epoxy board?

Sorry for the confusion

Here is the one i was offered?

I'm with Stu, the 6'6" that you are looking at there is basically a fish style board, the thing with those types of shape is that while you are beginning they'll catch waves great but as soon as you start thinking about top turning you'll find yourself catching the nose fairly regularly as you come out of the turn.

I wouldn't touch the SP board, they are tough but really stiff and in my opinion don't ride well.

What's your height and weight?

If you want an easy to ride allrounder I'd have a look at one of the many bigger guy shortboard options that are around.

Ahh ok. I thought a fish shape was shorter and narrower but I admit I dont know alot on the subject.
I weight 78kgs at 176cm so what size do you think I should go for?
