Got a few days spares between jobs in Asia and thinking of nipping over to bali to improve my surfing. So where is the best place to head to for a intermediate surfer in Bali with a decent surf school for lessons. Also looking for cheap accommodation. Be on my own so near to some life. Any views

Beats me why guys take the piss with a reasonable query.

We're not all shredders and chargers, peguin. There's a couple of schools along Kuta beachfront. More for beginners than intermediate, though you can usually get a guide from them that will head to some reasonable spots for you. They'll attempt to get you in and out of the breaks and find appropriate breaks for your level and even a cheap safe lunch.. Driver and guide between $80-100 for a 'day' if you have the cash. 5 days in Bali is like 6 months in Perth for your improvement. Some recommend Slim from Baliwaves but I haven't tried him. If you don't have any joy, PM me and I have a contact or two.

poppies 1 or 2 for accom if you ask around 15 bucks a nightwithout rats' plenty of bars ect,and kuta legion for surf.the waves will change with the tides and will be walking distance from poppies.avoid the crowds and if the swell is pumping it gets dangerous with rips.heaps of crew right off the area but they haven't had it good.imo schools a waste of time just get out there

Don't listen to these guys Peguin, things like surf edicate, positioning, reading line ups etc can all be picked up a lot quicker from spending time with more experienced surfers. If you haven't got any mates over there then the next best thing would be a guide or coach. These guys saying don't bother are probably the same ones that are often complainiing on this forum about kooks getting in there way in the surf, ditching boards or whatever.
Don't bother with Jim at Baliwaves , he's only really interested in taking photos and more often than not will take you to the most obvious pumping spots (mostly ulus) resulting in heavy crowds.

Peguin check out wavegurubali.com

70 bucks per night gets you an air conditioned room, 3 square meals and 2 guided surf trips each day.

Nick, the bloke who runs this place prides it on being a 'barrel university rather than a surf school'.

His wife Dee was on Indo Master Chef, so the food is phenomenal!

Well worth checking out if you want a budget trip with the main focus to improve your surfing!

Hi

We booked the reef surfer course through the rip curl surf school. We are average surfers. Day one was at Legian Beach with big foamies since they wanted to see how we surfer, was a bit informative, but a waste if you can surf. The other two days was at Canggu, all we did was surfed and didn't really get any feed back on our surfing.

If I were you I'd book on the day before rather than in advance. Have a chat with the person in charge about want you want to get out of it, otherwise you might be disappointed.

We did get some photos, but they need to clean the senor and there was no video so check that part two.

Otherwise just go surfing

A friend of mine just got back from the Chillhouse and couldn't stop raving about it. Surfing really improved through tuition and watching videos back with the instructors, great food and really relaxed location. Not sure of the $$$ but she was super stoked with the experience. Might be worth checking out.

Find a good guide. If you do, really make the effort to chat and build a good friendship with them. By doing so, not only is it fun'ner but that trust means they will help you out. When I was over there (different island but), I did that. We got to surf some spots locals only knew about, the guides helped me snag waves in a tourist crowded line-up. Bullied out of towners if they were giving me a hard time and generally became my family. Furthermore they picked out my bad points in surfing and after taking the piss out of it (I was known as the poo man stance for a good few days), they helped me to improve.

Sounds a bit different to basic coaching Waveless. This practice of paying heavies to get you set waves at the name breaks is getting out of hand in Indo. Shameless

and did you read the article on the Jap surfers who hired surf guides? they returned the next year and were beaten by the very same guides because they did not re hire them.

What goes around comes around. I think it's a sad sign of the times that it has gotten to this stage in surfing. What ever happened to good old fashion common courtesy. These days any kook with a few bucks and no morals can get whatever waves they want in Bali. I would find it hard to enjoy a surf if it came at the expense of ruining someone else's

thanks for the couple of suggestions there. Only in for a few days between jobs so after 1 place that does all food, surf, bed etc. In touch with waveguru bali. Checked out chillhouse website and looks a bit tooo relaxing. Cheers gents
I'll watchout for the heavies patrolling. Bit different to wave culture in WA.after many years of wavesailing on breaks where its generally a super friendly culture.

don't read to much into it penguin, its pretty easy to get waves and accom in bali the whole place revolves around it.particulaly if you are learning.just turn up mate everything is on tap.im learning how to wave sail at the moment ,if you want to trade some experience I can show you around rotto and anywhere else in wa .don't know if you've sailed at radar reef or starks but I recon it would be epic

Another option would be to get in touch with Slim at Baliwaves.com

He's more of a guide than a coach but is always happy to offer a few pointers along the way. He and his crew can pick you up from your accom, or you can stay at his homestay for around $20 per night, and he'll take you to wherever the waves are best suited to you.

Last time i scored Keramas on a changing tide with 4 other blokes in the water. He also took me to a few other spots that i had never seen or even heard of!
