Hey Guys,

Im was thinking of developing specific first aid kits for surfers that can be taken on their travels / and overseas to Indo etc.

Do you reckon its something that you guys (surfers) would ever look at buying? I reckon it would cost somewhere between $100 to $150 depending size etc.

Also would you guys have any suggestions, or magical items / old granny remedies etc that you think may be cool to include in a surfing specific first aid kit.

Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Interesting idea, but unfortunately to make the kit viable you will need to put in some stuff that is scheduled as Pharmacy only medication, which you will need to have a Pharmacy licence to distribute. You will be going down the path of supplying a restrictive substance. Yep, we can all go to the local chemist and pick up some voltaren or neurofen, but if you provide it (by selling a kit) then you are in contravention of some serious laws with hefty consequences...

Thx...That makes sense. I suppose thats why when you purchase a standard first aid kit its very basic with no medication :).

So really it would have to have only injury based items in it with no medication.

some local crew Rob & Kerry use to do the indo survival kit which had most of the gear you needed same price under $150

I would include Frias Balsem

I take antiseptic & various wound care size bandaids/bandages. Found fabric wound care stays on heaps better than waterproof plastic which lets water in over a few hours surfing anyway. Got buscopan for dodgy stomachs & metoclopramide for nausea. You can pick them up in Bali over the counter.

Steri-strips. And a good probe (I have two from a dissection kit) and tweezers. I guess my panadeine forte would be out of the question?

Great idea. The most common issue is reefs cuts that get infected and then go feral. Some grunty antibiotics, plenty of alcohol swabs to clean wounds 3 times a day and some decent Elastoplast for strapping and covering up.

My kids take perverse delight in watching me perform minor surgery as I open up cuts and start trying pull chunks of urchin and barnacle and coral out. Stuff festers so fast up north I can only imagine what happens in Indo. But yeah, antiseptic powders, liquids, ointments and antibiotics. I have seen some horrific injuries involving lots of pain in the NW, hence the strong painkillers.

I had urchin spines in my foot and the ends broke off one one or two...got back to school about two weeks later sitting there at roll call in the evening and looked down at my swollen foot my mate leaned over and poked it with his finger hard big mob of puss and a couple of spines go flying across the room....some serious pressure there...we were creasing up laughing...
