.... there be much difference in performance, stability, drive etc.... in the same board at these sizes:

6'5 x 21 x 2 3/4 and 6'6 x 20 x 2 3/4

I know it is only a inch, so sorry if it is a stupid question.

crustt, what would difference be? I'm presuming the 6'5 x 21 would be more stable, and the 6'6 x 20 would have more drive??

An inch in width will make a big difference. Length not so much, but does depend on nose shape.

Would help if we knew what board you are talking about?

How much do you weigh, how much do you surf, how good are you...neither of the dims you list are stock are you ordering a custom? Changing the width will change the outline which will change the bottom contours and the rail line length all which will change the way the board rides...

Tux the 6'6 x 20 x 2 3/4 is a stock second hand board, the other dims are a recommendation from a mate if I was to get one new. Not sure he knows what what he is talking about hence the question. All ther gear and no idea if you know what I mean.

I would say I'm an advanced beginner, 80kgs, and surf at least twice a week. Currently have a 7'6 Mal and 6'2 fish (35ltrs), but want something a little bigger than the fish.

Based on the inital reactions it seems that you shouldn't be playing with the dims of a proven shape.

I think you will find that 6'6 pretty corky unless its thinned right out at the rails....I ride similar dims to that and I used to weigh in at 110kgs +....you might be better of with something a bit shorter with a pulled in tail like the Fred Rubble Round tail or the Semi Pro 12 or even get the 6'3 or 6'4 T-Low with a pulled in tail....if you want something other than you fish for when it gets good and a bit steeper its not all about length its more about rocker and rail line these days....

Given the 6'6 is available second hand, you could just give it a shot. The only way you will find out about how different boards work is by tying them out.

I personally reckon it is a trap buying big brand boards new unless you really know what you're after. Personally, I have bought several big brands off the rack, none have been that great and all have been snapped or sold. My current favourite board is an older one I bought off gumtree for $200, although I recently saw the local shaper for a new order.

Morno you are probably a perfect candidate for one of Grant Miller's boards - 6'6" Water Skate maybe? Or perhaps you have a local shaper worth seeing..?

Thanks Tux. As I only get out twice a week paddling is a bit of a weakness hence the volume. Might see if the lad will let me take it for a spin first.... doubtful I know.

Thanks bene. Both my other boards are from local shapers and not big brands. The T-Low just seemed to be what I was looking for to help me progress at the moment. Went a bit too short with the fish to early and it hasn't helped my surfing progress.

I board with lower entry rocker and more width under the chest will help with the paddling...the Fred Rubbles are good for this...the guys at Full Circle on the Island also make nice boards.

This morning i gave the Hellfire a run. For 1" Shorter and 1" thiner it still paddled very well, but it was a real pleasure having less buoyancy..Duck diving and just general paddling into waves i found i sat in the wave a bit more than up on top. Responsive to turn and still stable/solid under foot..

Its amazing what an 1" can do

Lots of second hand boards I've bought the owner has offered a free trial ride. I've yet to do that as i prefer to knock them on price instead and take the consequences

Well as it's second hand it could be worth a crack.

Big brands obviously re-sell easier. While it's nice being able to try different boards, it can be a hassle offloading them.
