So ive just decided to make the move from Tas to WA, but not for another 6mths.
Im looking forward to being in warmer weather, having multiple surf spots to choose from and not getting into feet-numbing water, but i know there will be a lot of drawbacks too.
So, can anyone offer any advice/tips?
Is it safe to surf on my own?

Good luck finding some waves to yourself around Perth if thats where you end up. If you go for a drive a few hrs you will

Enjoy your new home. I love it over West. Great spot.

Expect inconsistent and crowded surf wherever you go in wa. It gets good sometimes but only fora day or two, not weeks like the east coast. You'll only need a 3/2 steamer tho.

Been a lot of fatal shark attacks in last few years, but don't let it put you off, more likely to die on the road

Ill be around maddington area, but i will have a night job so that leaves me weekdays... i think i will just book in a bunch of surf lessons and go from there.
and i live on the north west coast of tas, went out today and there was 1 other person that left not long after i arrived.
I have only been surfing for about 4mths, and i only just got a wetsuit this week... :P

I like your comment 'is it safe to surf by yourself?' I reckon you've seen some decent surf. Given you're moving to Maddington, may as well leave your boards at home. Perth beaches are straight, crowded, kneehigh crap. I guess you could pick up a reefy here or there. But a bloke like you who is used to 'not surfing alone' and I am guessing has seen some decent surf, you gotta take a bit of a drive from Maddington.

The drive from Maddington will be a short journey. Before you reach Thornlie your wheels with have been sprung from your car and the fuel drained from the tank at the traffic lights.

Weekdays doesn't make difference, still crowded due to fly in fly out workers south metro or north all the same.

Lessons good idea, as is a helmet to protect your head from all of the out of control boards

From Tasmania to WA, in particular Perth. I hope your are passionate about your work. Probably a good thing that you have only recently started surfing in Tasmania as you probably won't fully comprehend what you will be missing out on.

Buy a kitesurfer or a SUP/mal. There is an abundance of great SUP/mal waves around the Perth metro area and the place does get consistently windy.

Enjoy

Oh snap. Well that's a bit disappointing. I have seen good waves, but I have not been able to get to them just yet. And I have seen one or maybe two surfers out there, but if I say, got bitten by a shark. I doubt they would hear me scream :P
I actually have a 7 foot mini mal, but I was hoping to downsize by the time I got to Perth. Funny comment about the wheels getting flogged driving through thornlie, its definitely going to be a big difference to little ol tassie.
So how far away am I looking at travelling for decent surf? Like I said I have my days free 7 days a week until about 5pm, I guess if I'm serious about playing in shark water I will travel for it.

It is true that surfing Perth metro is compromised by crowds and poor waves. There are, however, less accessible spots that can be decent and that are less crowded. Further, as mentioned here by others, in summer wind and waves combine to make some spots "Noah Ka Oi". Seek, and you may find...
