Moving to Sydney this year for work. I live in Perth (which has **** surf). Just wondering what the surf is like in Sydney? How consistent is it? I havnt really been able to find any info on what it's like.

Crowded but an hour north south brings relief......
live near a beach or it will take you an hour to drive 5-10 Kay's after work in peak hour or 3-5pm...

weekends away way two or two and a half hours north will put you into good to excellent waves April may June also jam feb you can get something just not like Gold Coast cyclone swells but still decent mov-dec are like Perth rubbish sept and October can however pump..
for a crowded place the locals are pretty hectic, I got two waves in two hours at tamarama and there was only 15 people out..........get down to the gong or up to Central Coast and you will get 10-20 waves in an hour midweek or 3-5 on weekends... Some spots are however hold a real core local crew...think North point down south or gas... Yeah there's only 15 guys out from the carpark but they all grew up together.....

Make sure you live on or near the Northern Beaches, very different to the eastern Suburbs. NB is basically roughly 20 beaches, all with different reef/beach configurations that work in a huge amount of variable wind/swell combos. Chat to crew in the surf, make friends with locals and check out swellnet and coastalwatch to get some local knowledge. We surf reefs regularly with fark all crew, just gotta know where to go and when. Sydney averages a decent swell a week this time of the year.

Apart from Capetown I can't think of a better city to live for easy to access, reasonable quality waves.

My experience, albeit limited, is its small but way more consistent than Perth with more variety. Crowds didn't faze me too much. Northern beaches are better too.

great surf south of Sydney as others mentioned.

You will get heaps more waves over a year than Perth. A fish will be your bestie.

Very limited I would say. You need everything from a fish to an 8'0" if you want to have a crack at the many decent swells we get in a year. Wind is less of an issue here than the south west coast as well.

3.5 hours south is the best stretch of coast in OZ IMO.

Last Monday at my local - swell direction a bit out - solid 5 foot.

Sydney surf is awesome for a city and from what I've seen not that crowded if you know where's cookin. it gets big drip -maybe not quite the power of the south west but still it does get sizey (saying that there's days where it's crowded and tiny and full of tourists but take good with bad)
