Allowing access to Wedge has really damaged the place.
A party of 300 which ended in a murder is just insane. That crap belongs in Sydney or Melbourne burbs if not anywhere!
My cousin has written her story about Wedge. The good old days the way I remember it. Enjoy

I wasn't trying to say that a party resulting in murder should happen. My mistake. What I meant to say was that this is the kinda stuff we see on the news in big capitol cities, not in isolated fishing communities. I could have used New York or Washington as an example but was using Aussie cities just to keep it close to home. Anywho... recently a sealed highway went past wedge with a road to the shacks. Getting there took about an hour of slow driving along either the beach or by tracks behind the dunes.

Within minutes of my one-and-only visit to the Wedge settlement, I realised my inclination toward political theories of Anarchy was naive and misguided.

A lot of the attacks are crackheads on the loose I reckon - biggest blight on society these days - needs to be tackled from all possible angles.

Southwester has hit the nail on the head. We have a society that needs to waisted to go out. Organised crime gangs fighting each other and there merchandise is fueling our youth into an amphet lifestyle. It's a real shame about wedge. I don't know what the answer is. We spent a lot of time there when I was younger and it was such a chilled out place. I'm not sure developing it would sort out the problem.

Let's just hope they don't reproduce at a fast rate and take themselves out of the equation!

People have been getting killed at parties in little towns since Adam was a boy...the coastal highway in WA was a long time coming and may ruin some commuinties but it will also keep some alive...unfortunate that lots of beautiful little spots are now open to the masses...hopefully the Wedge community and others like it are strong enough to standup for the places they love and protect them

It's about time that Wedge was returned to its natural state and annexed into the Nambung national park. With the removal of facilities and application of national park rules, many of the current problems and environmental issues at Wedge will be negated.
Back in the 90's, all the shack communities between Leeman and Cervantes were removed. This included people who were long term residents, cray and other fisherman and farmers who had holiday shacks on the coast. There were sad stories at the time of the evictions of elderly long term residents who had nowhere to go. I was living in Leeman at the time.
Why should the shack owners of Wedge be spared the same fate?
The master plan for the area issued in 2000 recommended this due to "environmental degradation" of the area. Rubbish and human waste are poorly managed at Wedge.
The plan was smacked down and heritage listing applied to Wedge to stop shack demolition. It would be naive to think that the fact that both politicians and senior public servants from both sides of politics who own shacks at Wedge did not influence this decision.
Although the road has made access incredibly easy, the "Save Wedge" campaign and bumper stickers have given the area unprecedented exposure and greatly increased visitor numbers. Many people would not have known of its existence before this. You have yourselves to blame.
Roll out the bulldozers I say.

Return Wedge to it's natural state? I have never heard of that proposal. Any links?

You're right though. If Wedge couldn't be accessed by people then there would be zero environmental or social problems.

I think you just the found the solution to all the problems facing WA's towns, cities and settlements...

I think you'll get bad apples anywhere these days. I don't think its fair to blame the Wedge Island community though.

For me i think good on the Wedge Island community. They do a good job at looking after the place. Am i jealous of them? Hell yes but its there good fortune that they got in there early and have down a great job at looking after the place since.

I would like to see some form of camping available as well so that we can all get some use out of the place but i can also see the problems with that as well.

Its just a shame that once again, a few ruin it for the majority..

I support a cull on stupidity

I have a save wedge sticker and wear it proud...

There's two faces to wedge, peak holiday periods chaos.

Cold and winters wedge no one around a paradise for both surf and kite and a fish.

That's the wedge I remember...

One good thing re the road is less unlicensed meth head bikers.

Bad thing re road too easy to access

Wedge locals are sweet, just the meth head blow ins that cause the problems for sure.

I have had some of the best surf of my life up there in winter - bloody cold but well worth the effort of running the gauntlet on the skinny stretches of beach with big swells to have epic waves with hardly a soul in sight!

Yeah the first time you drive up on the new road you are filled with mixed feelings. One of relief that you don't have to deal with the beach, but also one of you now have to share it with those that wouldn't run up the beach

The young apprentice next door was at a beach party north of Two rocks. He said there were camps all over and they had a visit by a foot patrol of over 30 plus coppers..Obviously they were expecting trouble in the Dunes..

Yeah its like not being allowed to have your cake and eat it too ha ha

Almost lost my mates car 2 weekends in a row, both times had epic surf.

Knew it was a risk but at the time deemed it worth it

When i was younger, i remember in my Pajero Shorti i run through a section that had waves washing right up to the hill base. I thought just slow and steady would get me through the water..Well the wave hit the car and i felt it take the arse out to sea, tires gripped and i ended straight up the hill vertical trying to get away. I have never been so scared in my life

Now I'm older and wiser i just use speed as my friend

We use to have a shack at Long Point before it got bowled over and had a golf course built on it
Really hope the Wedge community doesn't disappear underneath a bulldozer as well.
Unfortunately the ever increasing amount of yobs that are trashing the place are sealing it's fate and will end up ruining it for the generations to come.
