It's about time that Wedge was returned to its natural state and annexed into the Nambung national park. With the removal of facilities and application of national park rules, many of the current problems and environmental issues at Wedge will be negated.
Back in the 90's, all the shack communities between Leeman and Cervantes were removed. This included people who were long term residents, cray and other fisherman and farmers who had holiday shacks on the coast. There were sad stories at the time of the evictions of elderly long term residents who had nowhere to go. I was living in Leeman at the time.
Why should the shack owners of Wedge be spared the same fate?
The master plan for the area issued in 2000 recommended this due to "environmental degradation" of the area. Rubbish and human waste are poorly managed at Wedge.
The plan was smacked down and heritage listing applied to Wedge to stop shack demolition. It would be naive to think that the fact that both politicians and senior public servants from both sides of politics who own shacks at Wedge did not influence this decision.
Although the road has made access incredibly easy, the "Save Wedge" campaign and bumper stickers have given the area unprecedented exposure and greatly increased visitor numbers. Many people would not have known of its existence before this. You have yourselves to blame.
Roll out the bulldozers I say.
