Just to clarify the "exemption" given to Wavejets in Victoria let me lay out the facts

Wavejets are STILL classified as a powered vessel and also the PWC catergory.

The exemption ONLY covers the following points

1) The do not need to be registered
2)They do not need to carry safety equipment such as flares and bailers
3) They do not need to have a licensed operator
4)They do not need to wear a lifejacket unless 400m offshore

GOT IT!!!!

They are STILL A PWC!!!!!!!

They still have to obey speed and distance rules near surfboards and swimmers.

They are prohibited from entering or launching from PWC exclusion areas, such as PT ROADNIGHT, SHOREHAM, PT LEO amongst many!!!!

Transport Safety Victoria have granted this exemption but a search of there website does not recognise any wavejet links

Email the Director of Transport Safety Victoria, Peter Corcoran at

peter.corcoran@transportsafety.vic.gov.au

and im sure? he will explain why you cant find it and am sure he will email you a pdf of the "exemption"

How could he not?? after all its a marine safety issue!

If you see any of these PWC in any exclusion zones, or interfering with surfers and travelling at more than 5Knots within 50m amongst other things, IMMEDIATELY ring VICTORIAN WATER POLICE and make a report.

These are the facts.

Get yourself a copy of the so called exemption and read it for your self

Get some balls surfers!!!!!! All i hear is big talk about how p'd off you all are, now heres your chance to learn the facts and enforce the law, stop talking and act!!!

Is this an issue were your from ?, I thought the idea was for the older boys or the guys with some sort of disability or injury who can't paddle on to waves anymore, what's the story man, the way your carrying on seems like there's some mass invasion

Why not have a look at their website and see how they are being marketed first.

No one is stopping anyone , disanled or otherwise, from using these things, just register items use it as the law dictates and there isn't a problem

On an interesting note, surfing for the disabled might want to check their liability insurance to see if PWC are covered

I'd hate to see them facing a huge liabilty payout because of any mis information they have been given regarding classification of wavejet as a "surfboard"

I know for a fact that the usual surf school insurance policies specifically exclude PWC use so unless disabled surfing groups have disclosed and got further cover....

Yeah but how many have you seen?

5kts in surfing terms is still reasonable speed unless it's a decent size, like prawn I don't get the outrage

I live and surf on the Peninsula and have never seen a wavejet in the water at either of the breaks that you have mentioned, let alone any of the back beaches. Now that doesn't mean that they aren't being ridden, but your comments make it seem like there are hundreds dominating the line up.

Fair weather surfers from the city on huge boards with no surf etiquette are more of an issue if you ask me

I surfed with one the other month.

No issues from me, the guy was fine and for all the motorized advantages he wasn't that much better off then us using our arms..

Probably helped he liked a chat and we weren't immediately arseholes to him.

Food for though for those few pro Wavejet type craft exemption

So you want to make your own? Isnt that the spirit of surfing that you can experiment and express through the blending of your equipment and ability?

Oh yeah, and for the disabled or older surfer we keep hearing about. Wouldnt it be great if they could build something to meet their needs and preferences and not have to fork out $6000 for a made in China corporate owned throw away?

WELL........

Sadly none of the above is going to happen!!

In an unprecedented ruling, Transport Safety Victoria will not give you ANY CRITERIA for you to qualify for this exemption!!!!!

????????

The exemption covers ONLY "THE WAVEJET PROPULSION SYSTEM", a blanket covereage to a brand , not a specification of vessel????

How strange you ask.

I wonder why the Director of Transport Safety Victoria would set such a precedent ??? It seems hard to fathom.

Ummmmm

He must just be exercising his discretion free from favour or bias i suppose.

I might just think on this for a while........

I've seen a few of these floating around the Sunshine coast QLD and Surf Coast in VIC, great innovation and brings surfing to the disabled community and those with injuries who otherwise couldn't surf. Excited to see where the future takes these boards!

I'm sure I'll be surfing one of these in a few years!!!

I think the general public can tell the difference between someone who really needs it, the disabled etc and in which case we'll even do our best to shout them into waves and enjoy the surf and the weekend warrior too lazy to get his arse into shape. The first I would welcome into the lineup. The other I will burn every day.

launch haha that's hilarious, bit of a over reaction I recon, when your getting burned by some tool on one of these things you have every right to fire up ,but it wont be every one that rides one acting like a c#nt,try not to brand everyone with the same label, target the individual and let common sense prevail for once ,im supping a bit atm and get a bit sick of narrow minded heros with their heads up thier own arses thinking any one who dose anything different to them is a kook or dosnt belong in the ocean, that's a bogan mentality.they have probably never even riden one but 18 months on a short board gives them a god complex f#ck off.end rant.
