If you have a motor you are a motorboat!!! Thank heavens sanity prevails in Victoria Australia at least as this newspaper article shows. www.theage.com.au/national/victoria/new-rules-prove-a-real-drag-for-jet-surfers-20130913-2tqa3.html Wavejets are a powered vessel may not impede surfers or swimmers, you have been told. Next time one comes barging through the line up dont sit back and take it, the law is on the surfers side!!!! If i was a wavejet customer and was sold a wavejet without the company informing me of these requirements id be looking for a full refund before my $5000 toy becomes an ebay curio at $300 :) Am sure there will be a lot more about to drop from a great height on them :)

ahhh mannn, you had my hopes up! i clicked the link hoping to watch some inexperienced wave jet rider have a go at a bomb, only to get stuck in the lip and go pearl diving. that would have been golddd! but this news isn't bad either.

I don't really know if sanity prevailing had anything to do with it... At first I was stoked because who wants to deal with these In the line up, but after watching the vid and reading the article then I think to put them in the same boat (npi) as jet skis is stupid.
These things are toys, less danger to the line up than sups...
While it would be infuriating to have more than one of these in each state, I'm sure this is just a case of some fat politician that has never surfed rubber stamping this through word association....
And that, like most things politicians do, is insanity...

So its ok if we have only one per state??

How exactly were you happy to exempt Wavejet and does that means that you would apply the same logic to exempting petrol powered versions???? Apart from the typoe of motor i cant see any difference.
www.powerski.com/

I suppose it is a sign of the times that middleaged surfers havent grown up and still treat watercraft as toys when it suits them, me me me !!!

The fact that they think it is in any way acceptable, let alone legal, to "drive" into a wave amognst surfcraft says it all!!

If youve bought one i would chasing a full refund if retailer hadnt informed you of registration requirements! Am sure Office of Fair Trading can help here. $5000 down the tube must grate :)

I suppose we can sadly look forward to the first court case when some clown , like those in westernport the other week, run down and injure someone .
That will be an easy case to prosecute :)

So in the interest of the purity of the sport are these guys surfing? - do we cut them out? (Disabled surfers on wave jets)
www.abc.net.au/7.30/from-wheelchair-to-waves---a-surfers-story-of/4821884

Being a paraplegic myself i am shaping waveskis for my use in NZ (already i've been out there with my kids sharing a wave and sunset - wow) - i'd love to stand up and surf but that aint going to happen. So next options, wave ski gets my head up out of the water. And looking at these guys on line - wow having mobility around the waves. All that now needs to happen is people behaving - treat each other with respect on the water. Don't be selfish. That goes for every one - disabled included - share.

Did you see that on facebook JB? Yahoo seem to be talking it up a lot. To be honest, I hate these things. I feel they take away the purity of what is actually surfing. But like all things in life, it ain't black or white but grey. If a disabled person or a super elderly turned up I would do my utmost best to give them way and hoot them onto a wave. If it is some obese middle aged rich yobo with no sense of surfing or understanding and taking waves after waves? I will happily drop in without a thought and burn them every time.

For somebody with a disability or who is mobility impaired, these boards are an absolute god send and are a fantastic idea. I know one of the guys from the Disabled Surfers Association of WA has been trialling one recently and he absolutely loves it.

In Victoria and in other States Wavejet has sort an exemption and received it from their respective Maritime Safety Authorities. Wavejet powered surfboards are not a "powered boat" , "vessel" or any other powered craft you want to call them, they are simply a surfboard. If The Wavejet board is under the Horse Power or kW rating specified by various authorities it does not need to be registered as a Vessel or a Personal Water Craft. Also the rider does not need a licence again because the surfboard is under the Horse Power, kW or speed rating.
I have been surfing for many years and have been struggling with my surfing for a couple of years now because of an old shoulder injury that I received in the defence of my country in the Air Force. I have been on a Wavejet now for six months and I am loving it! I will not make any apologies for using technology to help stay in the water especially to some "snotty nosed" "wet behind the ears" wax head who thinks that they are is too special and self- centered to realise that surfing is for every one who is willing to give it a go and not just for them.
Those same people who whinge about Wavejet cannot tell me that they do not use technology in their everyday lives to help and enhance what they do, especially in sport, new surfing technology is in every surfboard you ride so are you going to go back to your old boards with their old technologies, the answer is no! so don't deny me my use of technology!

I am curious do they make a lot of noise? And do they run the entire time or is only like power when you push a button or something?

Surely once you've caught the wave it motor is not needed

I see the wave jet as the leg rope argument of the new generation. Soon there may be more crew with them than without. Are you going to swim for your board when the guy with the leg rope simply pulls his board back and is straight back out there. Guys are already making there own jets soon other companies will get on board and the price will come down. The measuring stick in the pecking order will be the bloke with the biggest wallet and the high performance turbo charged donk on his board. This gives new relevance to the term aqua bogan. Should work a treat around here.

About as loud as a remote control boat, fairly quiet actually

Controlled by a wrist strap thing like a watch. You can switch it off or leaving it running on a wave.

They don't go that quick but once they get going and if the user has half an idea about the surf they aren't going to miss much
Luckily the bloke who came out with us was pretty good about it and didn't act like a prick. they could easily be a menace with a few around, completely banning them is over the top imo but they shouldn't be allowed within 50 yards of a surfer or swimmer.

And if guys start making their own then who knows how powerful and poorly made they could become.

Can't see it happening. Too disruptive of flex pattern in its current state. Requires too thick of a board to install. Too heavy? Users will be at the bottom of the pecking order at any decent break. No benefit in consequential waves when experience and expertise make the critical difference.

^^ yep,,, I saw an ol' barnacle boy simply point his mini in the direction of the wave and then stand up a few times at my local. On one ride, he literally did not make a single paddle movement.
He certainly didn't need any motor..
