As a surfer in WA I get an almost guilty excitement about cyclones

I dont want to see loss of life or damage to property but would love to see these things come all the way down the coast and and throw out some rare NW swell.

Unfortunately in WA because of the way these things spin the swell window is a lot smaller than on the east coast where the swell can travel from out in the coral sea.

Interested to get views on how far south these things need to travel to get any swell into Perth/Mandurah.

That shows you that we will be expecting cyclone swell from Narelle, more or less guaranteed. The one last year that came close got to about Geraldton (from memory) before dying out. Got loads of swell from that, as I'm sure many breezers can remembers the footage of, so even if Narelle came down to about Kalbarri or so, I'm sure we'd still see a fair amount of swell.

It seems that further south accepts swell from a bit further NW.

At the moment Seabreeze is showing a jump in swell on Tuesday but with a SW direction.

I think a cyclone sucks up a lot of weather so some of the storms will come further up than normal for this time of year but the actual NW swell is such a rarity

True, i have to admit i would like to see some proper storm weather hit the Metro area and really make a difference to the beachies. Maybe just make its way inland just enough to rattle the windows on Big Cols new office [}:)]

I'm not expecting much out of this one, it's too big and too west. For a north swell you want a small eye and close to the coast, it's a very small window of opportunity, a matter of hours. We'll get swell but as someone above said it'll be from southern fronts getting sucked up, not from the cyclone itself. Even if we do it'll have too much west in it.

edit* Bugger me i just checked the 4 dayer and Narelle is gonna get pretty damn angry once she clears the Capes!! Thursday night has a huge system at a pressure of 950, south west of Tassie. Looks to be offshore or glass for Vic too and maybe epic conditions for Shippies by about Saturday.

I remember surfing around canarvon in 92 or 93 and a Cyclone parked off the coast well up west of Broome....the joint we were at pumped then the Cyclone got its wiggle on and smashed the joint...good times

Looks like your right mate, its about level with gero now. But a bit west & downgraded to a 1. Looking good locally for Thurs/Fri so had a change of plan to avoid the weekend crew & heading down Mon to Fri instead...hoping for some NE by Tues to enjoy the North end summer swell breaks, but looking unlikely to get my wish atm...will PM ya when I get down, cheers Davo

Dave I heard that the day before you got there Nusa was a very conservative 10-12 and SE swell so you can imagine what that looked like!! Apparently was absolute carnage, only a couple made it out the back, lots of mega clean up sets.

Can confirm, had my arse handed to me at serangan by set, ripped booty off ragdolled then let up in time for second helping
Best smashing Ive ever had
Dave nearly donated his boardies after a death pit- was pretty heavy
Went back this morn b4 flight home but tide way low - Mrs made sure I made this flight

Got good wave at sri lanka after serangan beating, wave much more to my ability, tide up so take off mellow but the odd bomb kept me honest
