I have a quick question, i have used Solez often for small repairs and have always had a good run. But i have a couple of small repairs on my New firewire that i wanted to sort and tried to fix them the last couple of days. The issue I'm having is one repair worked fine perfect but i have one small spot that twice now the Solex has not set properly I thought maybe it was the tube had gone of but i just tested it and it worked a treat.

Im puzzled what i could be doing wrong? This time i have just left it and hope it cures over night, but it has been on since 11 today and its still tacky Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated..

I assume you are using the epoxy solarez to repair the FireWire.

Unlike the polyester solarez, I have found the epoxy stuff never seems to go off, and always feels sticky on the outside of the repair. However once I sand off the sticky outer coating it's all good.

Possibly you are experiencing the same?

Always cover your solarez repair with clear tape or plastic ....sets it off and no tacky feel

I have always used clear plastic (PVC) binding covers with Solarez, and it leaves a clean, dry, mirror smooth finish. I get the plastic sheets from work but you can get them from office works cheap enough.

Fill the ding with rez, then put the plastic over the top and smooth out with a tiling grouter. Leave the plastic on until the Solarez goes hard. You won't get that tacky or chewy feel to it.

Winter JB. You won't have this issue when it's warm. I applied a little heat with a hair dryer to get mine to set.

Okay thanks all those points are spot on and exactly what i have done. It feels tacky still today and i guess i maybe have over thought it. I do use clear plastic for a smooth finish and it also helps with sanding. Maybe I'm just overt thinking it..

I think one time it may have been a bit cooler. How about heating the board a bit first before applying, would that help

Oh and yeah its Epoxy..

What levels of sand paper do you use. I have started on 85 very gentle, then 240, then 400 ish and 1200 as a finish..Maybe a bit of polish after that Any good tips that could help..

To be honest I'm rather annoyed at the damage I've done in such a short time to a brand new board..

It says 5 minutes to set but do you leave the plastic on for longer? I haven't been leaving the plastic coat on whilst it drys.. I normally shape it than peel it of instantly so that could be my error

How did you damage it JB? Was it justified or just dodgy craftsmanship? If it was the board you put a pic up of the other day would like to hear because currently tossing up between that or a local shaper.

Its on the net some where that the O2 in the atmosphere reacts with the other layer leaving it tacky.
Just sand away the outer layer and below it will be hard and OK

Thanks for that. Yeah it really bugged me as i have never had it before, but i guess I've always used it in summer

Captn i have a dodgy toe and standing on rocks getting ready to jump a larger wave hit me i wasn't expecting and i sadly sacrificed the board more than my foot. Its just a pressure ding but had a small crack in the bottom and i wanted to seal it up straight away. The board did have a small bit of damage on the tail that i didn't notice until i got home from the shop, but more from it being dropped in the shop than any manufacturing defect

I like the idea of local shaper but i really am not sure what i like and just wanted to dial things (dimensions/styles and size) in with what I'm currently working on. Also i really struggle with "Delayed gratification" If i want something i want it know..
