Hi again,

I now know what i was doing wrong in my last post! fixed that problem but another problem arises

When i catch a wave, steeper waves i slightly angle my board to stop myself from going over the falls, once im up however i seem to either straighten out and then slow back into the white water or just manage to stay on the face and keep up!

what am i doing wrong and need to fix.

Board: 6'4 x 21 x 3 - Al Merrick Motorboat
Me: 6'0, fit, reasonable paddler, 60kg, can stand 8/10 times

the only way you're going to gain speed is by going down the wave, right? but if you go straight down the wave and don't have bottom turns worked out yet, you'll find yourself being caught out by the speed of the wave because you perhaps haven't managed to get yourself into the pocket. if the wave is breaking fast, keep your board angled down the line and try to take a high line next to the lip when you drop in, rather than going all the way down to the bottom of the wave. that way you'll technically be going down the face (giving you speed), but it's taking you longer to do so, so you can get the most speed from it. not sure if you know how to pump? if you don't, learn how to - it'll allow you how to outrun the fastest of waves. hope this helps.

^^^^^well said. i will add that look to where you want to go on the wave not where you are going. if your looking ahead when dropping in you will end up in the flats. where your head turns your board will follow

On a side note, at 6'0 does that board feel very 'twitchy'? I can't emphasise the importance of proper stance while surfing. Keep those knees bent low to not only maintain your balance but later down the track and even now it aids in acting like a 'coil' so that you have that energy transfer for pumping and pushing through turns.

Ahh okay, that clears a few things up! i am always going down the face and trying to bottom turn maybe if i just stay on the face ahaha.

Yes, people have told me to look where im going and the board will follow, that explains a lot swell. The board actually isnt too bad its responsive and abit wobbly sometimes however its thickness helps majorly with stability!
