It seems like GPS tracking is the next big thing in surfing from a consumer perspective. Has anybody seen one of these before?

I think the fact that you can overlay the data onto a GoPro video is pretty cool, I'm surprised the RipCurl watch doesn't have that kind of function.

At $199US its a decent price point, but I'm not a fan of stick stuff to my boards to be honest.

With the greatest respect to those who like to have all the toys, who kn cares ?

Surely, if you get a good one, you finish your wave, you look back at where you started, and think to yourself, that was about 50m (or 100m, or whatever) ???

I guess its horses for courses. I wasn't going to buy one once i saw the price but as a gift I've really enjoyed it. Im not a technical person and originally wanted it so when i traveled i didn't have to set my watch for tides to the zone i was in. I can just turn it on and it sets itself. Its cool to see how far you've paddled over a period, it also records all your surfs in a log and if you were diligent (you need to edit the conditions on size as its always smaller than the report) you will then have a log of the conditions, tides that stuff to help reference back.

I forget what days i even surfed last week so its also helpful to work out dates and times.

Also its really comfy and i need to wear a watch, id normally wear a tide watch so why not

Some people like that stuff, some don't, i also like to train with a HRM whilst others don't. I guess its just one of those things that makes us all different

Surfed trigg today with a bloke who had one of those nifty gps watches. He caught pretty much every wave right to the shore. I remarked after one of his waves "gee, you milked that one". He replied that his mate has a gps watch too and they're trying to see who gets the longest wave.

In summary, while he was dicking about in the whitewash, I got all the set waves.

Thanks Ripcurl

But i guess that post sums it all up in one. Everyone is different, what some like some don't, so not everyone is out there surfing a comp in there head wanting the best part of the wave (Not that theres anything wrong with that) , obviously for that bloke you spoke to it was more about sharing some waves and having fun/laugh with a mate
