I'm currently driving a Nissan Xtrail 2013 & considering something with next level 4WD ability. Mostly sand.

Was considering a Landy but my boss was a wealth of information when I brought it up this week and has me swaying towards Patrol.
Seems like a Ford vs Holden kinda thing and was a good convo, what do you guys reckon?

Chasing a Landy or Patrol with a budget of about 15k - 25k ????

Petrol vs Deisel?
Some motor over another motor? (boss was talking about hand grenades with some motors lol)

Don't need heaps of seating, just extra space for boards, not excessive fuel costs.
Enough room in the back for someone 6'2 to sleep would be a bonus.
I'm hoping to do a lot more OZ surftrips this year and need a new car.

Land cruiser all the way, however you may get more patrol for your buck, slightly newer lower kms etc

I may get laughed away here but 25k would get a pretty slick hilux ?

I had a Isuzu dmax and surprisingly was extremely capable which also had no problems for five years.

Anyway landcruiser 100%

As others have said, stay away from the 3.0 litre turbo diesel Patrol. Patrol or Cruiser, you'll pay a bit more for a diesel but worth it from an economy and reliability point of view as long as it's been looked after.Cruiser will always have better resale imo, have owned a 60 series and 80 series Land Cruiser, the 60 was one of the best cars I've ever owned.

What about an MUX? Might be a struggle to find one under 25k but your getting a pretty bomb proof 3y/o car that'll go where you want it to and it isnt 20 years old.

Get a dual cab ranger hilux dmax whatever and whack a canopy on. Might have to drop the tail gate to sleep in the back at 6 foot 2 but you get alot more reliable car for that 25k

I just got a V6 dcab Hilux a few months a go, maybe the best car I've owned so far.

Light and good on juice, also very nice to drive, car like.

But , ahem, longer boards...?? can't fit, right?

I fit a 6,6 in it no problrm. Anything else goes on the racks. I needed a back seat. I surf a 6,o most of the time so it isnt a problem.

Good points & value your input boys...had my eye on a 1993 Troopy for $11K a bloke had got working mechanically a1 for a trip round oz, but then had health issues. Would of been a good car I reckon....Smicko has me interested in Patrols again...besides that on second thoughts I think a troopy would be too high for my garage

Seriously Mick go take a 4.8 Trol for a spin, there's a few really well priced ones in Perth at present and they don't come up that often. I forgot to mention last post that I put extractors in mine too, really opens them up. The only thing to avoid is one that's been on gas, cooks heads.

the 3.4L in the 90 series seemed to be regularly doing 400k kms without breaking a sweat too if serviced regularly. There was one for sale fully kitted out for touring down Esperance way for $8k with 200k kms in mint condition a few weeks back. Bargain!

Because they cost so much more to service, at more regular intervals, and if you do a fuel pump or such you're up for thousands not just a coupla hunj. Sheesh! Why wouldn't you want a diesel?

Owned this car for over 5 years, and its been a reliable bus all the way through. I bought it from an old couple who had it from new and used it to tow their caravan. The car drives and presents very well considering the age and kilometers. Has the odd scratch from 4x4 as they all do. No rust at all. Have just gone through the cooling system today: New radiator, new thermostat, new thermostat housing gasket, new radiator hoses and clamps, system flushed and topped up with new coolant.

Mods:

- 3" lift kit with Dobinson shocks and King springs

Paid 17K for the car in 2014, and have put 10K into it since then.

Gear box is tight and smooth. I have the 2 rear seats, can chuck them in if wanted.

Avoid the 4.2 and 4.5 petty patrols, both are thirstier than the 4.8 and gutless to boot. The 4.2 td is a solid unit in it's standard form but is an absolute slug, yes you can tweak them to get good horses but it'll cost you another 10k and they then tend to overheat. For me it'd be an 06 onwards Patrol TB 48 or a live axel Cruiser wagon, not a PC.

Price up a turbo and the hipressure fuel pump on any diesel. Ive never replaced a fuel pump in any car Ive had unless it was for performance.
Ill stick to petrols thanks, you can have the diesels.

Plus I do my own services and get filters (gen) very cheap

Also particulate filters on the later stuff can run into $$$ as well.

Nothing wrong with Commin Rail Patrol engines. The ZD30 was the one that might blow up. Having said that,, the reality is most of them didn't.

The 3.0 litre is way better in the sand than all the other Patrol, and unaspirated Landcruiser, diesels (including the Patrol 4.2 turbo diesel - it's an overrated slug) just keep the revs up.

The Patrols are absolutely bulletproof apart from the ZD30.

I went to steep point recently with a mate and his petrol 80 series returned the same economy as my Patrol on the highway. Any of the petrols in Nissan or Toyota will chew more fuel around town, but you get way better pick up. Having driven pretty much all the engines mentioned in both brands, I think petrol is really underestimated.

I've heard autos go well in the sand, I think I'd probably prefer one. Most important to me is the body is straight with no rust, engine is good with service history and under 200k km I guess.

Also heard the newer ones are all gonna be petrol, I think that was the patrols. Getting a lot of info from all directions. I wouldn't mind a petrol model, like someone said diesel is not so cheap anymore.

My old man used to say petrols the least cost associated with a car. With the rego rippoff these days, I'd say he's even more right. Mines almost doubled for my car in 5 years.
