I guess its pretty subjective for me. For me its not just about surf quality but about the spots I've had the most fun at and that have a special place in my heart:

1. Contos

I have special memories of this beautiful place as it was the place I went camping with mates when I first got my license. it was also the place I saw my first shark and caught my first wave south of Mandurah.

2. Secret Harbour.

This used to be known as Surfs Beach and at one stage you could drive along the beach to find a lonely peak on a cold crisp winters day. its now a crowded joke. banks seemed better then too.

3. Cathedral rocks

Uncrowded weekdays on our boat. followed by swims with playful seals.

4. Inside Cables

Close to my work and had many awesome sunset surfs usually with no one out. that was years ago and haven't seen it working properly since then. makes those memories even more precious

5. Bombing Ranges

Again, uncrowded winter peaks, getting bogged, camping with friends regardless of the surf. Eating bacon and eggs on the beach. Watching my dog Occy running around the beach with the pure joy of being a dog.

Re cathedral rocks, how long have the seals been there? I used to surf the place a bit in the late 70's, early 80's (long ride on a pushy) and cant recall seeing any. Must be the creepiest place I have surfed for sure, recall some guys who had a pod of orcas / killer whales come by once, walked on water to the beach apparently.

Don't know when the seals first came but i've been visiting Cathedrals for about 6 years and they have been there since then at least.

can be a bit spooky which tends to keep the crowds down. being the last man in the boat can be a bit unsettling

I surfed Trigg Pt from 1980 - approx 2000 - and whilst it might sound totally cliched, it does not break anywhere near as good as it used to... I remember it being far more consistent - with one particular week that I surfed to exhaustion 4-5 days in a row. By day 6 I just went down to watch... just let perfect 3-4ft waves go. Now you might get one good day - but by the next the swell is 1/2 the size or the bank is 'off'. I blame Hillarys Marina for stuffing that and first reef Waterman's (stopping the natural sand drift).

I don't think I'm going to surf it anymore. A few times I've surfed it at dawn alone. One time I was watching and another guy arrived. It was pretty big and the seals and dolphins were out. I said "I'll go out if you do". He agreed. I was in boardies and rashie and out on the reef and jumped off quickly. I paddled around the reef (spooky in itself) to the break. I watched him walk tentatively out a short way from the beach. Then back to the beach. Then he picked his way across to where the boats anchor and out on the reef. Then back to shore. Then he left. No-one else arrived for 90min. It was disconcerting. I dunno whether it was the urchins (as bad as anywhere), the limestone (as bad as anywhere), the marine life or the wave size that scared him off.

There's footage on youtube of whitey swimming past an automatic camera off the reef there, in about 3m of water. I'm sure whitey's there all the time. Not to mention dolphins and seals swimming between you and the reef constantly. It's a marine highway for big animals. It's pretty spooky out there. Plus when I've been I ride my bike and walk out directly on the reef, jump out between the reef heads and paddle around the back. Where the seals feed. It takes a while to get around. I think it's too sketchy for me. Fat burger wave anyway, except the final slab section can be fun.

Just finished reading Occy's bio. It was Occy and some of his mates that were out there and apparently a pod of killer whales showed up and were feeding on a big school of salmon.

Agreed it is def one of the most unsettling places to surf when alone or even just a couple out ...

Agree on the sand flow, Hillarys marina and the groins to the south has killed off alot of good spots. Toms used to be heaps better then it is now and Scabs beach was no where near as steep as it is today and the banks were more consistant.

How good is the view!! camping used to be $2.50 per person and there was firewood and water from an old hand pump. It was an adventure for a newly p-plated 17 year old. I've got pictures of my board at the time which was a 6'2 Hot Brewz shaped by Aido Sheperd in the day. it was my first custom. It was when Murray had his shop at Herdsman Lake.
Very fond memories
