I meant to post this a while ago. A wake boarding forum exists at www.wake.com.au. In this thread about 2/3 the way down there is reference to a SUP race that went through the area of Deep Water Point.

www.wake.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1845&start=6700

I know of a couple of SUP people who own shops or import boards and are good blokes. They also have an acute awareness of the rules of the water and have a background in other sports such as windsurfing or surfing. But there are a majority who don't. Many who think 'I've paid my 2500 for this board, I'll paddle it where I see fit'.

Anyway, this is a new sport (SUP) and in general I think the public are very accepting of them. Sometimes it feels as a surfer, they're only annoying us and everyone else thinks it's a great idea! But it seems this new sport with all its enthusiasm and perhaps people involved who do not have backgrounds in other sports are beginning to annoy others, not just surfers.

The thread I showed above has a few wakeboarders saying they claimed D.W.P. for a paddle event. I think this is terrible behaviour! I have paddled in the bridge to bridge (where you start at the Narrows and finish at Left Bank, crossing Point Walter) and during that event we were never expecting to displace the general public. In fact, crossing the sand bar is done to avoid other boats and boat wakes are part of the event!

In the wakeboarding thread above, it seems the SUP people tried claiming a busy, popular area of water skiing. I think that's terrible behaviour whether it was done within the law or not. This new sport is annoying other people too...

Classic comment from that forum

I know what I'd do now, I'd touch a few buttons to make my boat as fat as possible and swamp the idiot !!

For as long as I know DWP has been for skiiing unless the head of the river was on and even then only part of the river is out of use.

Skiing area in Perth is at a minimum as it is. These is so much area that can be used for SUPs yet as usual they need to use a spot that is already being used. Typical

My last 2 dings were from 666er's...one dropping in as I came out of a barrel last Tues & a guy who came racing across in front of me trying to avoid getting drilled a few months ago. Not to mention the pommie chick with the big mouth who paddled across too deep yelling "watch out" & bailed her 666 into me. Then say's, "I told you to watch out" LOL wtf bitch...Even though I have friends who don't negatively impact on my sessions, even help me at times with their lookout abilities. I have a strong dislike for anyone else riding the mongrel things & wish there was some kind of restrictive laws in place to reduce their impact.

Had a SUP almost run over a mate who was paddling for a wave a couple of weeks ago.

The guy just paddled over from another bank and went for the wave my mate was going for only just missing him.

We were surfing on our own before he came along.

Aside from Dave Muir who f*ckin rips and is a good bloke in the water, they can all get f#cked. Middle aged stains with little respect or ocean knowledge and even less skill...they've started infecting the reefs around Cott, with their bumbling, balding incompetence.

That could describe many surf users, not just 666er's

goaties? ,,they're in a different league. Now they don't give a ,, dam.

i only know a couple of 666'ers. They also surf short long and any kind of board. They know the rules, take turns,, go lookout for the sets, and call you in.. nice guys.. they're just trying to make the best of the conditions available. can't blame them for that.

I guess it takes all types. I meet a Goatie a while back at my local and he tells me he has lived there for 23 years..But hasn't surfed it because he felt it too small a crowd and so he surfs bigger beaches. Anyway turns out he is a top bloke and charges hard with a smile that is very infectious.. Ill take him over the speed bumps any day

inpart wa71 i do agree with you, but orgy of bad surf manners shown by short and longboarders alike here in wa is like nothing iv've ever seen, so it's hard for anyone to really rip into sups ,when the basic surf rules which were drilled into me as a grommet ,just don't seen to exsist at perth metro beaches , I guess it's one of those cliche's monkey see monkey do,

In the old days before sups imo most people were well aware of the rules. It seems in the last 10 years we have seen the quality of surfer drop as so many people are taking the sport up. Do they teach the rules at surf schools? I bloody hope they do

SUPers seem to think that they are entiltled to surf where and when ever they like and is true to a certain extent.
The problem with SUP at deep water point is that water skiing has been there well forever (as long as I can remember and I was born here)
and who is to say that the skiers have to forgo their 2% of ski area when there is heaps of other places they can do as they please.

I understand what you are saying tortise but its SUPs jockeys in general that are the problem. I think you are trying to take the SUP component out and using surfers as scapegoats tbh.

Motorized surfboards are next mate. Surfed with one the other week.
Luckily old mate was pretty cool and didn't hassle.

To be far i mentioned my local as its rather small and not really considered anything special. A novelty at best, but i have no issue sharing with any craft, as long as they do the right thing Also i was pointing out a guy who has lived with in 500 meters of a wave, didn't think he would be welcome because he is a little different than the norm

Just in case your referring to me Weiry

Its not SUP's that are the issue its the the freaking people riding them....these people are likely to alos ride bikes 3 wide on a road while wearing lycra and yell when a car goes past them....****wits of note generally...I am gald I surf near cliffs and rocks with hardish paddle outs and crew that have no time for iddjits
