Everyone these days knows when there's swell, when it's offshore
All we have to do is log on and the Internet will tell us
What the Internet won't tell us is things like consistency, crowd numbers (unless there's a camera), how the swell direction is hitting etc
These things can only be obtained by local knowledge and by getting off your ass and going for a drive
Especially when you live somewhere where a lot of breaks are on offer
Had a surf at a out the way spot the other day. A spot that I thought would be hit and miss. Ended up being really good and had my best surf for ages. Was only two of us out and we couldn't believe our luck. Surfed all day and the people never came
Keen for some more I hit it for the dawny the next day.
I couldn't believe my eyes. The car park was already full, instant crowds everywhere. People sprinting down the beach to get there
I happened to ask one of them why they made the effort
The reply was that they heard it was good yesterday. I also asked how they found out and they mentioned the other guy that was out with me the previous day said it was firing . He talked it up at the caravan park where he was staying.
Instead of a crowd of two there was twenty two
Why are surfers so stupid
Why are they quick to talk up a spot to randoms they have recently surfed.
You have made so much effort and wasted so much time and petrol to sus out a place and then you talk it up to anyone and everyone
Do they think other people really care how good of a surf you had
The only thing they care about is getting there and getting some waves
A random surfer asked me today where I surfed and I told him I wasn't telling. With a look of surprise he asked why
Because it was uncrowded on an Easter Friday and I don't want to see your face in the lineup tomorrow

Agreed, I don't understand it either, the sharing of the same information with hundreds of randoms on the internet baffles me more though.

I surf all summer long. People often ask me where. I won't say, and they get offended and people say I'm an idiot. The places I surf typically handle a few people only. If I said where, all it would take is one person passing on the info and my spots could be ruined.

Zuke's got some good spots. All it would take is one Chinese whisper and years of hard work would be wasted.

Given most Perth waves are fickle beachies, all you have to say is where you surfed and guaranteed silent web observers will be there tomorrow checking it out. And they'll keep coming back until the bank dies.

think about how you "found" your spots, if you found them without any prior knowledge acquired from others then good on you. I understand your position on you personally sharing info but I'm not sure it makes that much difference. Anyone with half a clue and a decent car can find waves with or without your information.

I agree, any place in the world can be found with a few taps of your key board
Any one with a car can get there
But they don't know the day to day conditions of a spot if they don't go and have a look
The Internet might give out free surf reports but I don't. Whats the point of spending my free time and fuel sussing out a spot then advertising it with a big mouth so it becomes crowded

I'm strongly considering visiting your spot tomorrow bakesy. I'll be in the neighbourhood all day anyway with a bunch of spare time. Never been before. Never would've heard of it it it hadn't been for your reports and pictures. It looks like somewhere I'd enjoy, and I'm pretty obnoxious and reasonably capable. You sure you want people like me?
