After watching most of the years events and espescially the portugal comp, i wanna throw it out there, Are the pros getting carried away with claiming every F**ken wave or are they purely pumped? I am kinda over it. what do you guys reckon??

I know what you mean. They see to be letting the judges know what they reckon its worth. I supose if it works for one they are all going to get on board. Julian Wilson must have been pumped at the end of the final. 40 odd seconds to go and he gets the wave. A bit of stoke must becoming out.

I agree they should just let thier surfing do the talkng. Lets hope it doesn't get as bad as grunting in women's tennis

Definately have noticed it. Julian Wilsons wave should not have been awarded as much as it had from my point of view but always punting for the underdog! Wonder if they will bring in a rule to regulate it although don't see that happening. It may just be training judges to ignore the claim?

They got a bit annoying for me too. But its all just playing up to the crowd. The crowd at portugal are right on the shoreline and it's a shorebreak so there is quite the atmosphere. You don't see the same claiming go down in places like Chopes or Cloudbreak where there isn't the huge loud crowds on the doorstep. Footy players kick goals and they play up the crowd, surfers get barrelled and they play up to the crowd, it's the way sport is these days. Wilson's little claim when he came out of that final barrel was ordinary I reckon, and then his little low risk turns to follow weren't much to get excited about, but he had every right for his final prayer/claim at the end. I also don't think that wave was an 8+. It certainly was going to be close to the 7.5 he needed but was no way an 8 for mine.

I wonder about the judging sometimes. It seems to me that they will over compensate or under compensate for wave scores, of previous waves they have handed out and and felt it should have been more or less

Hope that makes sense..

I agree during this event I saw a couple of claims after exiting the barrel when there was at least another point left in the wave.

Yeah they claim to much, it's one thing to claim a pit you could drive a bus through at Chopes or pipe but claiming a top turn combo in a beach break is and always has been lame but. If it gets a .5 higher score than I gues it's just part of a heat strategy.

I reckon JW was okay, he thought he'd won, I think that is what he was claiming.. Which I reckon is okay
