Been surfing in Taiwan twice this year once in March for 20 days . Hired a small station wagon and drove ourselves. And just came back from 10 days end of September went with World surfaris. My advice... drive yourself ,was heaps better. World surfaris really ties you down to their hotels and places to visit and eat. We had heaps more fun and surf doing it our own way.

Must be cranking there now, my missus was almost stuck in Japan last Saturday from one of the biggest typhoons they've had in years.

+1 on driving yourself, roads are great, waves easy to find & most people speak English.

My pics n overly long video are here

I heard on the radio the other morning that somewhere in Japan had 984mm of rain in 24hrs during that typhoon. Kinda hard to get your head around huh?

I'm tossing up between Rote and Taiwan after Christmas, can't make up my mind...

^^^^ Id give Rote a miss at that time of year as its peak season is approx. may - late september, you might get waves but its unlikely around that period. taiwan sounds a better option and there's plenty to do if the surf isn't cooperating.
Rote during peak season is getting ridiculously crowded until it gets up to 6-8ft and above then it thins out

Yeah, I dig that about Rote but I was chasing Boa not Besilau. Boa was all day offshores apart from one day that was light WSW for the same time period this past January, the thing I can't find is swell history for the same time. Be a pretty quiet spot if it's flat for two weeks. Needs less swell than Besilau, but it's a punt for sure.

Defs leaning more towards Taiwan, looks fun.

Yeah I found Taiwan awesome if you're driving yourself with the missus and kid's. Plenty of culture with lots to do and see. with a waves here and there. But if you're planning a exclusive surf trip with a couple of mates I'd try a different location with more consistent surf. It's not that good a place to plan for waves. Maybe stop over for awhile to check it out. You may get lucky and score,or you may just get skunked .
