Has anyone here surfed with stitches in? How'd it go? Looks like a couple of good days coming up and I've managed to put my chin through my board, leaving a nice gaping hole requiring a few sutures.
I would advise against it, I have two nice scars on my legs from cuts that failed to knit up properly because I kept surfing. Saying that i did surf about a week after having me appendix removed and it did no harm.
I put a fin into my hand and got 4 or 5 stiches, went to chemist and got some spray on skin.Seemed to work alright, surfed the whole following week, till wound healed didn't have any probs. Just make sure you clean the stuff off after each surf let stitches dry and keep wound clean, Can't remember the name of the stuff though should be easy enough to find though.
I also have a couple of bad scars on my leg and foot from surfing and not allowing bad cuts to heal properly... I don't think you'd want a scar like that on your chin...remember, that's for life.
For reference, where I had my ankle recon and was in a cast (so could not surf), the stitch line is super fine and barely visible - although it is about 12cm long.
Just had to have me nose stitched up after spearing me self with the surfboard. Wicked swell lines coming in and I've got to watch from the side lines..... Wounded
You can get some medical type adhesive tape from the chemist called Hypafix. Waterproof and holds well on skin when wet. Used it downsouth when i had stiches in my hand and didn't have a problem. Just be careful when you take it off that you don't rip the stitches out. Just peel it off slow.
Yeh i've surfed with stitches in the sole of my foot. Just wrapped a ton of duct tape around it to try and hold it together better. But yeh, be careful taking sticky stuff off if your skin is soft after a surf.
Cheers for the replies, the gash is nestled in my beard so adhesives are out. Brother just sent me a surf report to rub it in too. Looks like I'd better keep it dry, I'm off work till the stitches are out.
