Hi All,

What's the best surfing magazine out there at the moment?

I tend to by Tracks, but keen to get other peoples opinions.

Tracks is my favourite maintstream (hate to use that word) mag for sure. Granted, the only time I ever actually buy it is at the airport waiting for a flight (to Indo usually).

Foam Symmetry is a quality mag to if you're just in it for some great vibe pics. It's a beautifully presented mag (quarterly I think) and always gets my imagination going and my heart pounding for another trip

Start collecting them all, each has pros and cons.

For cool stories, nostalgia and big pics go White Horses.

For page 3 girls, new wonder kid articles and all the news fromthe ASP go any of the generic mags out there!

You sort of get a bit tired of the mags talking up the same team riders. It's all a bit boring
It's very formula reading and very politically correct
Bring back the ASL Reilly and Baker days.
I think they got banned from Hawaii for upsetting the locals. Not to mention the Hoyo party days
Wouldn't see that today

How long ago was that? I used to collect ASL 10-15? years ago and loved it. Got a few ASL's within the last year and thought they really lacked something, but wasnt sure if i just loved them more because i was younger. Wished i kept them so i could read back!

Tracks isnt too bad, its the only one i really bother with if any.

Smorgasboarder - its free from surf shops.

Tells stories of board makers / trips etc. No stories on 18 yr old wunderkind who does air reverses.

Good read and great stories.

Bring back Lash Clone............

Smorgasboarder is good for the price, but every single article is a promo for one of it's advertisers. I know it is the nature of the beast, but it wears a bit thin as every thing you read is an ad.

Read that Tim Bakers book Surfari, ya reckon he's a good surf journalist? It was a book about nothing with very little substance.

Funny you say that about Tim bakers book crust, I actually really liked it. Could really relate to the whole mix of family and kids verses actually getting waves on a holiday. He even has a paragraph about this website and this forum in particular in his book. From memory he talks about forum member Thommo. Anyone else notice this?

Ditto, most other mags are like women's weekly. One flick through and throw then away.

Well while your at it, order Kelly Slaters autobiography cause I would say that would be the most boring book I have read, so no doubt you guys will love it

I just found Bakers yuppiness annoying, and I thought he did bugger all research into some of the places he visited.2 stars.

Yeah
Regardless of what people think of Tim Bakers journalism skills I think what he and Derek Reilly managed to put together ( with help from Collins cartoons) was gold
Growing up it was the only mag I looked forward to reading and the only one I have ever collected
No one was immune to having the pissed pulled out of them and a spade was always called a spade
Made them a few enemies but it also made ASL a great read

I paid ten bucks for foam symmetry the other day. Has a nice feel to it good stories with great photography. I like watching the comps but cant be stuffed reading about how good every body is in the corporate surf world. I like pictures to be honest. The visual expirence that leads to the dream.

Tracks crap imho these days

cost cutting lead to minimal decent photos and rubbish stories

one edition last year was almost all about one of the editors breaking his leg after the bells comp - wtf

rest was fill in on the bells comp

sometimes forget (like when at the airport) and then swear never to buy it again
