Hey guys... we are off to Broome on Monday. Was there 25yrs ago about the same time of year and remember scoring a chest high beachie in the morning and afternoon on the incoming tide... nothing particularly special but it was good fun.

Just wondered if anyone has a more recent report... as i am wondering if it worth taking my fat-fish with me.

Thanks

If you want. Personally I just hire a board. I have been there three times in the last ten years and surfed every time but the waves are just small giggles and a an hour was more than enough for me.

Thanks - however the Mrs rang the Back Packers and they told her they would not hire boards to people who are not staying with them... I believe there's someone on the beach who also hires boards - but we have been unable to get in contact. Do you know what sort of boards they are? I am not interested in surfing a 7'6" soft-top!

Cheers for the reply - and yes, just looking to have a play for an hour or so...

At 115kg I'm not sure a foamy will cut it

The beach bloke is the guy I have used and he stocks a pretty wide variety from what I remember. I just use a mal or minimal from him.

At 115kg I wouldn't be knocking back the 7'6'.

And obviously, at 115kg, I wouldn't be making this comment to your face !

I was up there recently and seem to remember seeing signs about board hire, but it could have just been the backpackers.

(Thread hijack...)

Bit of a coincidence, but I just posted something in the kiting section about Broome also.

Anyone surf up there often? Looking at moving there for a few years and hunting down info!

A mate lived there for a while and he swore black and blue there were regularly good waves at a few different places. Can't remember where exactly but I think somewhere on the southern side of Gantheume Point was one. Not consistent but regular and half decent.

Update: after checking broomecam for a few days i decided not to bother bringing my board. Although i saw a few chest high waves they were few and far between... we've been here since Monday and unfortunately despite a small spike in the swell the strong morning easterlies have killed anything that tried to become a wave... not sure if the guy hiring boards on the beach is making any money ($15/hr - $25/2hrs) although he seems to do well with chair and umbrella hire

At least the days are warm and the Matso's beers cold!

Sunday update: the remnants of that big swell finally made it up here. Cable Beach had waves between chest and head high. Very similar wave to Mettams rights (although the left was better today)... 3 out at 10:30am - about 20 by 12:00 when the wind dropped.

Although it was nothing special it was very nice to be in the water in boardies...

And yes thedrip, Gatheume Point is a spot that works on the bigger swells. We Kayaked around the point yesterday and you could see the swell lines coming through. Its a left.

I was there early nineties and remember it being very tidal. I can't remember exact tides but I think it was best between 4.5 and 5.5m incoming tide. You only get an hour or so but still better than nothing if your up there long term.

Yeah, the tide's about 4-5m at the moment and increasing through the week. I surfed for two hours late morning, I but it was still good an hour later, and crew were out at 8:00am, so possible to get a decent session in. Water temp is beautiful...

Will google CW Smicko...
