Surfboard bike rack - I tried searching...

Hi all

Simple question. I just bought a bike and want to ride with my 6"9 to the beach.

Which rack? The back or side version?
Perth can get windy.

Or make your own....I have access to tools, bunnings and some knowledgeable wood/metal workers.

I made one out of PVC pipe but to be honest it was more hassle in the end at some times it would break if I clipped it on a corner or wall while ridding.
I'm a bit rough with my gear though.
It was easy to make and for me, materials were free

this is similar to what I did

Side version takes a bit to get used to, turning circle, putting your foot out etc, the back version used to be a pain to ride into or across the wind.

both have there good and bad points, I just think for a 6'8 the side might be better, but I haven't tried with anything over 6'3 on a back mounted version....

mate have a pair in the garage no brand on them but lite as,local sb store stocked then a few years back.

Bike shop at scarbs has the side version comes complete with a rear cargo rack for about 150 (I think) for the short board version and 200 for the heavier duty mal version.

Other option is to build a trailer from a $30 trolly from bunnings. I have a trailer as its normally me plus one-two groms heading to the beach

Side mount for under $20.

6-8mm steel rod, bent just so to hook over and under the frame where it joins at the neck. Done just right and it will be able to set up and removed in seconds.
At the back, a couple of stainless hose clips will enable you to attach the same rod to the brace above/below the brakes. Also removable in seconds without tools.
All padded with pipe insulation of course.
All from bunnings, of course.

i have one which is from a company called" the mule". super easy to set up. rolls behind your ride like a trailer,so no wind issues. great for whacking your kit on. cant fault it except for the price,buy far the best and most practical system i have used

Sounds like a winner to me...I'd rather spend my money on gear than things to hold my gear. like the idea of removable as I am keen to use this bike daily.

Ladies and gentlemen we have ourselves a winner. Pictures of the build to follow. I didn't get an A in woodwork for nothing....shame there's no wood involved.

hmmm need to consult with the awesome metal work guys at my work. Or print out a picture and look for the guy who's worked at bunnings for 15 years.

but what do your stainless hose clamps connect to....... I can see some other metal device.... can you take a pict a bit more zoomed out? if it helps my bike looks like this

your problem is you needed a pink bike to pull that style off

Nup. You're out of luck with that bike...It kind of depends on a horizontal cross bar.

i'm thinking an s bend that wraps around the bar that connects to the handlebars

hahaha the guy in the bike shop already tried to push me to the pink section

i would recomend the side rack it is heaps easier to ride with i would also be buying one from a shop not biulding your own

why so? custom usually dominates over factory duplicate


is he a WA shop owner in disguise?
