I was working in the Maldives for a bit and tried to surf there too. It's an up and coming surf spot but more known for diving...so people don't really go there specifically to surf as far as I know. Season is around May - Oct.
There are a couple of breaks located just beside certain resorts such as Hudhuran Fushi (Lohifushi), Kandooma, Tari Village Resort, Full Moon and a few others. Some of the resorts with breaks next to them sometimes only allow the resort's guests to access them, like a "private break" kind of thing...which is quite rubbish. There are also surf operators that can organise trips to breaks not accessible from the resorts. The more famous spots are in the North Male' Atoll, such as Lohis, Pasta Point, Honky's and Sultans.
You can surf in Male' too, there are usually about 10 local surfers & boogie-boarders in the water on a good day. It's a pretty small surfing community in the capital.
Bring your own boards as there are no rental places around (watersports centres of some resorts may have a board or 2, you can try to check). The shops in Male' that look like surf shops have maybe 3 boards in total for sale, all highly marked up. And bring booties coz of the reef and sea urchins.
