hey all, well im thinking of going over to bali/indo for a few months. i will probably leave Brisbane mid June, and return end of august.

i am only 19, so i would be doing this on a total budget of $2000!!! ($900 krudd money + all my savings). can this be done on this sort of money...????
has anyone done a long trip on not much $$$ over there before. how much money could i live off for a day???

i will probably do the trip solo for most of it (friends might go for a week or two), so is it easy to meet up with other people doing a similar thing???

what is the go for finding really cheap accom, just rocking up and asking around???

what boards should i take. i was thinking my 6", and a 5"10' fish. i weigh 66 odd kgs and i am a confident surfer.

and what is the best way to book the flights, using a travel agent or just online.

ok, so alot of questions, however if you can answer any of them please do. also, if you have done something similar, please add your experiences.

thanks.

I think you would be able to do it on that budget, but only if you like dried fish and rice? otherwise if you live it up a little you may have to cut the trip short than you hoped? last time I went was with two kids and wife, so living it up and had a great time.

what board are you going to use when it gets over head and dble o/h? just in case. but two of your regular boards for sure.

have a great trip!

I reckon 2000 would get you a month, comfortably. But it all depends on the what, where, how. What are you planning on doing?, where you going to be doing it, and how you're going to get there?

I recommend picking this little puppy up www.indosurf.com.au/ it was almost a bible for me on my first trip.

Stay on the water's edge for 30,000rp a night at Balangan.
Eat mie goreng for breakfast lunch and dinner for 10,000rp a pop.
= 60,000rp a day.

You'll be fine.

Get a ride to Medewi for about 350K stay at the Mai Malu for 80K a night eat the best banana pancakes in bali every morning washed down with the best iced orange juice in the world. Flog a giant Mei Goreng for lunch with again another of the best orange juice in the world, then smash a Nasi Gorenge or Satay chicken for dinner with some bintangs. All while surfing the longest(300m) and most laifback left point break in bali in between.

My tip is don't be another drunk aussie thinking you have the right to be in Bali - show respect for the locals, learn a bit of indo, make some friends and this will set you in good stead for following trips because trust me the indos never forget a face.

But definitely dude I recommend getting the indosurf book

Check out this website, it might help you out for your 1st time visit to Bali: www.couchsurfing.com

It offers travellors a chance to find a place to stay for a few days, make some friends and learn more about the country. The forum provides a lot of information about where you can get cheap accomodation, or meet up with fellow travellors as well. One of the post on possible cheap accomodation: http://www.couchsurfing.com/group_read.html?gid=1979&post=2500277
There are cheaper places too if you're simply just looking for a bed to sleep in, can ask around Poppies Lane 1 & 2, when you get there.

This website give you updates on the Bali surf condition: www.baliwaves.com/

Loads of aussies and other surfers in Bali all the time. If you hang out at the same spot for 2-3days, you'll definately make friends. Everyone is very friendly, especially if you're a fellow surfer. Rent a bike (with a board rack) at abt 35,000idr a day and you can explore all the less crowded surf spots too. June - August is the peak season, so it might get packed and accomodation might be a little more pricey too.

Most of the backpackers and surfers stay around poppies lane 1 and 2, which is adjacent to Jl Legian. It's close enough to the beach (Legian, Padma, Double Six) eating places and clubs/pubs. If you eat Bakso (a meatballs and noodle dish) by the beach, it's about 7,000idr per bowl. Nasi Campur/Nasi Padang is ncie and cheap too.

If you wanna get away from the crowd, you can also stay along the road to Uluwatu. But i'm not sure how much those places cost. From Padang Padang all the way to Bingin, Balangan and Uluwatu, there are accomodation available, you would need a bike to get there though.

I spent about Aud$700 in 20 days. This includes room (100,000idr per night), scooter rental, board rental, internet cafe, alcohol & loads of partying, nice restaurants and some shopping. You're a guy, I'm sure you can survive on less.

Have fun!
