Heading down to Torquay next week for 10 days to watch the Bells comp with my son. He wants to go surfing each day as well. I'm not familiar with that coastline. Looking for some fun waves for him. He's 9 and is fairly competent in small surf if its not too dumpy. Any recommendations? Will be exploring east and west of Torquay within a reasonable drive.
You'll find a heap of mini point break style setups that'll be perfect for your son. You dont need a guide book on the Ocean road as you can pretty much see the surf the whole way of your driving west. Try Spout creek, Torquay back beach or even fairhaven if it's small
Torquay back beach on the high tide usually has a few banks up in the corner near the surf club Point Addis is also good on the high tide stop at the steps as you come down the lat big hill...don't go all the way to the end Out the front of the Wyndham resort usually has a nice right on the high tide Cozy Corner generally gets some peelers on the low tide but might be a bit small unless he is just learning...very protected If he wants to dip his hand on the reefs I would say Point Impossible is the best bet...pretty fat on high...good on the low Uncrowded beach breaks at Fairhaven and 13th dependant on Wind If it gets real big head to Lorne for some fun ones If its small surf Jan Juc beach breaks
Theres over 20 named breaks between my house and bells which is a 10 minutes drive...they will all be crowded for the next 2 weeks and then it will be a ghost town to November the 17th
