What's everyone's opinion of surf photographers posting pics and more particularly naming spots on social media?

I've seen guys post photos of some lesser known spots that work on a bigger swell, then name the break, the suburb and even the street - then within minutes you see halfwits tag their mates saying "we gotta check this wave out bro"

I'm all for surf photographers, but in the era of social media those quiet spots aren't going to be quiet for much longer.

where i am on the goldy i love posting pics hours later. a lot of spots especially beachies,and even the points work better at different times and tides. i have banks near me that will work on a rising tide and others that work on a dropping one. even when its onshore...i say nomore

what i dont understand is when im looking at a perfect bank that is empty and old mate is ringing his mates telling them to hurry up had a crack at a bloke one day and he just looked at me like the clueless fuctard that he was

I posted pics and never named the location or the crew and no one here could pick it. There was a guy next to me shooting pro apparently he put it in a mag and sh#t hit the fan over it! My pics are not even water marked.

Is there any reason why they can't just say secret spot?

I still can't belive I posted a pic of just a flat water. And someone picked a spot.

I guess it all depends on what you deem a secret. I have been buying surf mags for decades looking at pictures of surf breaks that once would have been a secret spot, to someone. SO is it okay to post a pick of say Pipeline, or Ulu or Trigg for that reason

Sadly no one owns the beach and there is not a lot that can be done about population growth. Look at Yanchep area, hell the use surfing beaches in their advertising billboards. The spots that will be secret are often hard to get too and that in its self is enough to help keep them secret/less crowds.

Were i surf there is so many photo hogs and the picks that come out are amazing, but you need to remember that A single photo of clean wave, doesn't make the break. Sometimes hundreds of picks get taken to get that one great shot, and these days also a lot of photoshopping goes on also.

Its the new generation of kids that love to take photos, video and share it with their mates, for the rest of us its called getting old/grumpy

I agree theres no need to ring a hundred friends when you turn up and its on
Having said that though, i will often turn up surfing with both my kids, his mate and his two kids so sometimes i bring the crowd, but i will always avoid busy spots obviously.
