Hi Mocha, plenty of good waves within striking range of Melbourne but you will need a car. Nearest would be the Mornington Peninsula 1 hour drive away. If there's a bit of west in the wind and a reasonable swell Torquay is a safe bet but is a little bit further. Grab yourself a copy of the wavefinder atlas so you can pick your best coast for the day

Where you staying Mocha? It might make the difference between driving an hour or two hours?
Unless you're hoping for storms so you can 'ride the bay'??
Look Doggies been there too !!

Probably head west then, (gotta have a car), and pretty good choices then if the conditions are ok.. pack a good wettie for July.

Gunnamatta, Rye, Portsea are all about an hour and 20 out of the city, but its pretty busy at the weekends. Point Leo and Flinders are a bit closer but nowhere near as good.

Never been over the other side of the city ie. Torquay so can't comment.

If you're in the city you will need a car to get to the surf regardless of which area you go to though.

Phillipe Island is the go for a day trip, little bit further but more options. Fantastic beachies and some quality reefs and usually you can find somewhere off/cross shore and less crowded at that time of year, can be good weather in July. Only go to Torquay if the swell bouy http://www.portofmelbourne.com/wavedata.asp read over 3m. it is way to crowded,

wow thanks guys

"mexican pipe" looks similar to sorrento west in a 30knt onshore.

I like the thought of Phillip Island but being a WAussie and only equipped with a 3/2 steamer, how cold is it really??
(surfed in Newquay, UK, in a 3/2 in their spring/summer......brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr)

the visit to Torquay academy could be the go.

Thanks though for all the info

Nowhere near as cold as newquay in the spring, I've surfed Margarets in Sept. as cold as anything I have surfed in Vic, see if you can borrow a sleeveless hot vest to wear underneath the wettie.
If you like pm me 4 days out and I can give you an idea of your best options, I don't know much about the monington peninsular, you have to know where the banks are.
