Hi Guys,

I am planning on going to Indo for 6 weeks through July-August, this will be first time over there.

Was just wondering if anyone had any advice as to whether it was worth getting a surf guide? as i will be by myself for the majority if not the whole trip.

I am planning on going to Bali-Lombok and maybe Java, are there many mellow waves over in Bali? just for the first week so I can adapt a bit before tackling ulu's etc.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Cheers!

Buy a book about surfing in indo... There's heaps... Google surf indo lingo... No need for a guide.... You've got plenty of time to research... My advice to you would be head to medewi... 2 hrs ish up the east coast... Should cost ya about 30 bucks in a cab... Mellow left hand point... Not too many people... You can sort accom out when you get there... 5 bucks or 80 a night.... Depends on how hardy you are... As a first time indo traveller your gonna get ripped a fair bit, just try and learn quick from your mistakes... Make a friend that's done it all before and get an idea off him the dos and do nots... If you're not on your game there's no need to go to ulus, Padang etc... Best to stick to the waves your comfortable with, you'll have more fun that way... It's a bit of a circus out there... But in saying that it truly is a beautiful spot and a special feeling having a beer on the cliff after a wave or two
... Research research bud... You are gonna love it after the initial shock, you'll come back a changed surfer... Have fun....

^ I agree, Medewi/Balian if your chasing something mellow. Maybe even Berawa on a mid to low tide. But I'd forget Ulu's unless your already fit & at least a fairly good surfer coz its always busy when its on. There are plenty more waves up the North West coast to offer more challenge. If your only going for 6 weeks I'd stick to Bali/Lombok & leave Java for next time coz travelling round there can be a bit of a challenge itself unless your just jumping on a boat at Tuban & heading to G-land along with the rest of the July-August masses.

Alternatively you could stay at Slim's place in Tuban baliwaves.com Very good value considering you get accomodation in a good location within easy reach of waves catering to pretty much all conditions, advice on where to go based on your skill level, transport & photos. I just got back from 2 weeks in Bali today & bumped into Ketut & Pat who's staying at Slim's at the moment (had guest house to himself). He's the bloke with the orange boardies in the pics over the last 2 weeks or so. There's a pic of me barreled, 2nd last pic on the 7-8 Jan
