Can be a tough call, if somewhere heavy or somewhere I am not confident in I would take the safe option, if there were a few crew out I might chance my arm and make sure to acquaint myself with the crew out there??
In most cases Surfers help surfers but have seen it go the other way a couple of times because it was not obvious it was a serious situation.
Agree , if you are surfing solo would need to be confident enough in your own ability to know when not to go out , recognise rips , etc . I have been surfing alone for last 5 years at least - surfed with 1 other Christmas time and 2 others last weekend otherwise all alone on the beach - unless the kids come with me which is a rare event these days .Too old paddle against the young ones for waves

Lucky enough to live in a relatively remote spot so not hard to avoid the crowds .
