The break down -

For Slater to clinch his historic 10th ASP Crown at the Rip Curl Pro Search Puerto Rico, the following scenarios must occur:
- If Slater finishes Equal 3rd or better, he clinches the 2010 ASP World Title.
- If Slater finishes Equal 5th or Equal 9th, Smith must win the event to send the ASP World Title Race to Hawaii.
- If Slater finishes Equal 13th or Equal 25th, Smith must finish Equal 3rd or better to send the ASP World Title Race to Hawaii.
- Essentially, if Smith fails to finish higher than Equal 5th, Slater claims the 2010 ASP World Title.

FYI

And if he wins, didnt Richard Branson say he'd give Slater an extra mil or two? Extra incentive might I say!

Is Slater the worlds best athlete? If you took someone off the street and they spent a week with Roger Feder or Tiger Woods at the end of the week they would probably be able to smash a couple of decent shots but at the end of a week with Slater they would still be a kook.How many sports people have won 10 world titles (its gonna happen)in there sport including retiring for a couple of years then coming back and winning a few more.

I agree Hopi, he is the best sportsman/star in the world.

I doubt there will be anyone better..

The crazy thing is that he is still coming up with new stuff. He's never been a follower - always pushing the boundaries.

I heard a comentator say at the french comp .....that if he wins his tenth...he will become the greatest athlete...ever

Sure Kelly is one pro surfer right out of the box and I doubt there will be another pro who will win 10 titles in total again but I'm sure there are other WORLD champions who have won 10 or more in their chosen disciplines. Remember an Aussie called Heather Mckay,world squash champion.She won the world title 15 years in a row between 62'-77'and when she retired in 1981 she had not been beaten in 20 yrs WOW !!!

sorry everybody but theres no comparison in my book. this guys a complete freak. Surpassing anybody that tried to change thru the generations of surfing to keep on winning? pffft. he is the King and feeds off the up and coming by learning they're new talent and adding a little more but not giving to much future away.

I agree,I had no time for him in his early day's,bloody yank winning everything with a attitude until I read his book Pipedreams and it changed my view of him,not as a surfer,we are know he is sh-t hot,but as a person and the hard up bringing.

I think Slats is a bit over loved by the judges. Maybe there sharing the tem mil around a bit.

Another couple of reasons why i think he is the best athlete ever is that at 38 years old he beating guys near on 20 years younger who are considered at the cutting edge of what can be done on a wave. Also, as a professional surfer you have to be adaptable to different waves from 2 ft to 20 ft, i mean how many other proffesional sports is your field of play different every time you enter it?,all a tennis player has to deal with for example is the surface and the air temp/wind, a surfer has to deal with something that is moving! Yeh, i think i'm a SLATER fan.
