Hey brothers, Over the summer I have progressed from riding my cruiser to hitting the parks on my old skatey. The long flat spells have taken their toll. The kids have also been a driving influence in this progression. I have noticed their are a lot of guys who surfed a lot that have made the transition to skating due to the lack of quality surf around perth. Further to this the existance of several parks seems to under threat and I havn't been able to find an organising body to become involved with. Searching the net has been fruitless. I have made a few contacts with some crew from the YMCA and a few skate shops in town. I was wondering if anybody knows of an organising group for skaters in Perth. I know this isn't really a surf topic but most of us have proberbally had a crack at a skatey at some time.
No sorry - but when you find out please post - I'd be interested to see if there any plans for a decent park in the Greenwood/Kingsley/Woodvale or surrounding areas and may be able to get a group of my son's mates to raise a petition at his school...
Usually if you have any problems regarding skateparks you have to speak directly to the council, or get to know the guys at either momentum or beyond skate their the guys who know whats going on, had a problem with kids smashing the lights at the local park so rang the council they came down a couple of weeks later and put in new globes and put cages around them
Sorry for the delay in reply. Ive been away, work related unfortunately. I have made some inroads and it appears the crew from the YMCA who run the Leederville park have set up skate wa. They hope to have the commity fully set up and running bu the end of the year with monthly meetings. Skate WA has a link to the Sports and Rec department with in the state govt. This is proberbally where my mission starts. The crew from outerlimitz have been instrumental in getting the go ahead for a state of the art park in joondalup. I hope to start work on getting a pettion started soon apparently you need 800 names before they listen. Claremont park will be destroyed in November to make way for a developement and there are no sights in the general area to replace it. My hope is for a redevopment of the perry lakes site to accomodate all users and have a family ellement to it. The skate park in carine is from what I hear a very good park run by the rangers.
Sorry - I'm not clear, is the skate park in Joondalup up and running - or just in the planning & development stage??
Whilst the Carine skate park is very good, it is nearly always over-crowded, and unless you are already good - the novice to intermediate riders tend to miss out a bit... as such, we've actually travelled up to the Ellenbrook skate park a couple of times...
The skate park in joondalup has just been or is about to given the go ahead for construction. I believe it has been three years in the planning. I hear you about the over crowding that seems to be the problem all over the place and is why I have embarked on this project. The fact that the parks are over crowded proves they are popular to the mind numb councils. Safety becomes the issue and hopefully we can change thier thoughts and get upgrades and new parks. I believe the park at Melville on the cnr of stock and canning hwy is a great park for beginers. Not to sure if thats to far for you. Thanks for the offer to help with the petition I hope to have a face book site sset up soon and already have a plan of attack. If the system for getting new skate parks works I see no reason why it can't be used to lobby the govt for artificial reefs. The reefs would be a lot more expensive but the govt has heaps of cash you just need to get to the bloke with the key.
Yeah thats the one next to the PCYC. I am optimistic about getting another site in the area after speaking to the claremont council. It is state govt land and a state govt initiative to take the park. If we dont get organised and speak to the sports and recreation dept re this issue they wont do anything about it but they will listen if an organised group or individual puts forward a case.
Im not sure about the hammersly site. A quick phone call to the parks manager for the local council will answer your imediate questions. Most councils have youth forums for 15 to 25 year olds. I think this is a great way for younger crew to get there opinions heard. Getting the young crew to the meetings is the hard part. Partitions and local papers are the way to start and always focus on the positives of the facility rather than the negative aspects.
Lots of work to do to get this off the ground. I will keep you posted if you like.
theres some guys who are doing a similar thing, getting a petition going for a city skatepark, theyve actually made a documentary for the council to help out
There is a good energy out in the community when it comes to skating and providing an opertunity fot the kids and older kids for that mater. I have found the local councils to be very supportive. Cool movie. Thanks.
