Hey guys, Iv been learning to surf on my 6ft 20wide 2 1/2 thick board. Its been abit of a struggle to learn on but iv managed to push through and start catching some nice waves. Some days are better then others lol!

Im still finding it hard to duck dive, I think its because of the width and thickness of the board.

Im 175cm tall and 80kgs Short and stocky build. Although i still want to keep surfing with the boar i have now. Im just wondering what dimensions should be for my next board... being that i will be better at surfing in a few more months. I want to end up surfing fast with nice tight turns and possibly some airs (eventually lol)

I surf on the gold coast mainly burleigh point :) Cheers for any info

Hey mate,
I am surprised you can't duck dive that board considering your build. Are you having trouble with technique? Nevertheless, as for the next board, I would go see a local shaper about a custom, taking into consideration weight, height, ability and type of waves you want to surf. As you said, the current board is more than sufficient for now and I would keep at it. I wouldnt be in a rush to trade up.I made that mistake before and ended up going backward. I am now on a board more appropriate to my size (fat) and ability (crap)
Anyway, I wish you luck

Thanks for reply man! I can duck dive the board on how do i say.. on smaller and non breaking waves. Its just the big close outs and when im on the inside i just end up loosing **** loads of ground and most of the time loose my board lol.

I think as you said it would have alot more to do with technique and timing. Any good tips for duck diving would be appreciated :) I think ill defo go to a custom board for next board, But as i said ill keep on mine for some time to come :) cheers again for reply!

surfschools are awesome and will improve your surfing 10 fold even in a couple of lessons. Even if you've been surfing for 20 years or more ,they show you correct technique from beginners right thru to comp surfing, which escalates your surfing ability.

Try this one xwaters.com/blogs/topic/how-to-master-the-duck-dive I think there is also a post with recommendations on choosing the right board.

Found it xwaters.com/blogs/topic/finding-your-magic-board, its not as in-depth as I remembered, but there are many posts is Sean's blog on different aspects of the boards.

Try to get as close to vertical as possible when you push the nose dwon....get your foot back and push through...it should be like a pendulm movement when done right
